MARINA DEL REY, CALIF.--The No. 15 ranked USC women's rowing team defeated UCLA 6-1 in the annual dual on Saturday (May 11). This victory over the Bruins extends USC's winning streak over UCLA to 18-0. In addition, this win solidified USC winning the Crosstown Cup for the 2018-19 athletic year.
"It was a nice change to have the race in the afternoon," said head coach Josh Adam. "Seeing the shores of Marina del Rey filled with cardinal and gold supporters was such a treat. We want to thank UCLA for a great set of races. Rowing away with a sweep of the NCAA categories was special and bringing home the Crosstown Cup for USC was a really great experience."
For a list of boatings and final times, see below.
The dual was scored with the following system: the Varsity Eight race was worth three points, the Second Varsity Eight race was worth two points and the Varsity Four and Third Varsity Eight were each worth one point.
The Second Varsity Eight hit the water first and defeated UCLA's boat by a decisive nine seconds. USC's final time of 7:10.40 gave them the first two points of the day.
The Third Varsity Eight race was next, but the Trojans did not enter a boat and forfeited the one point it was worth.
Up next, the Trojan and Bruin Varsity Four boats prepared to compete. USC also entered a Second Varsity Four boat in addition to the First Varsity Four. The top Trojan Four boat placed first with a time of 8:26.80 to put another point on the board for the Trojans. UCLA's Varsity Four came in second place and the Trojan Second Varsity Four placed third.
The Varsity Eight would close out the evening of racing as the Trojans beat the Bruins by 13 seconds. USC's final time of 7:00.90 locked in the final three points of the day giving USC a final score of six points to UCLA's one.
The Women of Troy will now prepare to travel to Sacramento, Calif. for the Pac-12 Championships on May 19.
