No. 8 USC Men Cruise Through To NCAA Second Round

Hosts top Northern Arizona 4-0 at Marks Stadium to advance again.
LOS ANGELES, CALIF. — The No. 8 USC men's tennis team scored a spot in the NCAA Second Round in opening up its 2019 postseason push with a 4-0 victory over NCAA newcomer Northern Arizona at Marks Stadium. The Trojans rattled off two solid doubles wins before a rapid-fire finish in singles saw Brandon Holt, Tanner Smith and Daniel Cukierman close out the sweep. The win improves USC to 21-7 overall as the Trojans now turn to face San Diego in tomorrow's 3 p.m. Second Round match at Marks Stadium. The Toreros beat Minnesota 4-1 in their NCAA First Round match prior to the USC-NAU battle today.
USC made quick work of the doubles point with seniors Jack Jaede and Laurens Verboven lighting the fuse with a swift 6-0 sweep of Fisher/Steele on court two. While a tighter match raged on court one, USC's Daniel Cukierman and Tanner Smith came through and pocketed the doubles point for the Trojans on a 6-2 win over Taylor/Tumosa, bringing up singles action at Marks Stadium.
The Trojans would capture the first sets down the line in singles play. On court one, #6 Brandon Holt kept his foot on the gas, getting to match point and pouncing on it to beat NAU's #71 Tim Handel 6-1, 6-1. He barely had time to shake hands with his opponent before #57 Tanner Smith finished off his match with Tom Fisher on court six, turning in a 6-2, 6-3 Trojan victory to get USC in reach at 3-0. Not a minute later, #24 Daniel Cukierman had captured victory on court two. His clinching 6-2, 6-0 win over Lucas Taylor interrupted senior Laurens Verboven's look at match point on court three, and wrapped things up as a 4-0 USC victory.
Seeded No. 8, USC is looking to make a deep run at the 2019 NCAA Tournament. The Trojans are in the tourney for the 13th straight year and aiming to punch a ticket to Orlando and improve on last year's Quarterfinal appearance.
