D'Souza Leads Three Trojans Under Par In Amer Ari Invitational First Round
February 06, 2020 | Men's Golf, Features
USC combines for a 4-under first round.
Junior Leon D'Souza posted USC's best round for the fourth time in a row while freshmen Yuxin Lin and Tyler Guo joined him under par to lead the No. 18 USC men's golf team during the first round of the Amer Ari Invitational on Thursday (Feb. 6) at the Waikoloa (Hawai'i) Kings Course.
The Trojans finished the first round tied for ninth in the 20-team field at 4-under 284, 10 shots back of first-place No. 19 Texas and No. 2 Georgia Tech.
D'Souza fired his third straight round in the 60s – and his team-leading seventh overall – with a 3-under 69, good for a tie for 17th and five off the lead in a field where more than 60 players carded par or better. He had six birdies on the day as he looks to build on his second-place finish last week.
Lin, with three top 15 finishes this season, collected his seventh round under par in 10 tries with a strong effort that saw two birdies without a bogey. His 70 is tied for 28th.
Guo posted his second sub-par round in a row with a 1-under 71. He got off to a 3-under start and was able to stay in the red throughout the day. He'll start the second round tied for 38th.
Juniors Kaito Onishi and Issei Tanabe are tied for 80th after 2-over 74s while senior Kyle Suppa, playing individually, is tied for 92nd at 3-over 92.
The second round Friday will begin with a shotgun start at 9:30 a.m. PT.
