Xin (Cindy) Kou led the Trojans with a 71 in the stroke play portion of the East Lake Cup
ATLANTA - Junior Xin (Cindy) Kou leads the way with a tied-for-second finish as the Trojans advance to match play as the third seed, and will play Wake Forest, after the stroke play section of the East Lake Cup on Monday, Oct. 30, at the Atlanta Athletic Club.
Kou came out of the morning as the most consistent player, providing two birdies and only one bogey on her round. Overall, the junior carded a 71 (-1), which led the squad, and she was one of only five players to be under par for the afternoon. Sophomore Catherine Park was not far behind, as she finished out the morning at an even 72 and put herself in a tie for sixth place. Both players anchored the Trojans, as the team finished at four-over-par and landed in third place heading into match play.
The final three spots in the lineup all stood around the same marks after the first 18 holes. Freshman Bailey Shoemaker held the slight edge over the other two Trojans as she carded a 74 (+2) to push her just inside the top ten, at tenth place.
Following Shoemaker was the two veterans of the squad, senior Brianna Navarrosa and junior Amari Avery. The senior started a little shaky on the front nine with three bogeys but found her stride in the second half, as she pared every hole after No. 8. Avery, in her first tournament back from Q-School Stage II, bounced around in her scoring, as a long up-hill putt for birdie on hole No. 18 allowed her to walk off the course with a 75 (+3). Navarrosa and Avery ended up tied for 11th after the one round of stroke play.
Next, the Trojans will hop into match play, playing the No. 2 seeded Wake Forest Demon Deacons in the semifinals. USC and Wake Forest last met in May at the National Championship when the Demon Deacons claimed the crown after a 3-1 victory.
Tee-off for this event will start at 8 a.m. PT/10 a.m. ET tomorrow with event coverage beginning at 12 p.m. PT/3 p.m. ET on the Golf Channel/Peacock at the Atlanta Athletic Club.
