Trojans Pound No. 2 Oregon State, 17-4, to Take Series
March 29, 2024 | Baseball
IRVINE, Calif. – A night after winning a 2-1 pitchers duel on a walk-off single, the USC baseball team exploded for a season high 17 runs in a 17-4 thrashing of the No. 2-ranked Oregon State Beavers on Friday night in Irvine.
Not only were they a season high for USC, but the 17 runs scored were the most Oregon State has allowed since 2022, and the 13-run margin marked the worst defeat for a Beavers team since 2012. For the Trojans, it marked the second time in two weeks that the team has beaten an opponent by 13 runs, with USC putting up a 15-2 victory over UCLA last weekend. With the win, USC improves to 11-15 overall on the year and 6-5 in Pac-12 play. Oregon State, who came in with just two losses on the year and had not lost back-to-back games since the 2023 season, falls to 21-4 overall and 5-3 in Pac-12 action. It is USC's first series win over the Beavers since 2019.
USC trailed 1-0 through the first three innings of play, but came back to take the lead thanks to a four-run fourth inning. Jacob Galloway sparked the rally with a solo-shot to left, and Carson Wells and Dean Carpentier also had RBI in the inning.
After Oregon State responded with a pair of runs in the top of the fifth, USC blew the game wide open with 10 runs in the bottom half of the inning. The Trojans sent 14 men to the plate in the inning, scoring the 10 runs on five hits, two Beaver errors and two wild pitches. Wells had a two-run single, and Galloway and Ryan Jackson each had run-scoring singles as well. It was the most runs a USC team has scored in an inning since 2018 (Feb. 23 vs. Villanova, 10 runs).
The Beavers mustered only one run the rest of the way as the USC pitching staff held the Pac-12's top scoring offense in check for the second straight day. Jared Feikes got the start and gave up one run in 4.0 innings pitched. Michael Ebner and Fisher Johnson worked the next three frames, before Brodie Purcell finished things off with 2.0 scoreless innings.
Six different USC players had hits on the day, with four Trojans recording multi-hit games. Wells' three RBI led the way.
