Maccagnini Leads USC Women’s Cross County To A Third-Place Finish At The Waves Invitational
August 30, 2024 | Women's Cross Country
Trojans enjoy a strong start under new cross country coach Mallard
Gigi Maccagnini placed seventh to lead the USC women's cross country team to a strong third-place finish at the Waves Invitational (4K) at Pepperdine's Alumni Park in Malibu, Calif. today (Aug. 30).
The Trojans tied for third last season and this season captured third alone with 73 points, trailing only Cal Poly (30) and Long Beach State (50). The course today was fast and most of the Trojans posted significant 4K personal bests.
"This is a good starting point," said USC's new associate head coach for cross country Milton Mallard, who began earlier this week. "This is the first meet with a new coach, and we are excited about what the future may hold. We will continue to get better. We will work on the things that need improvement and hope for the best in this season. I think we have a great group of young ladies and I we are going to continue to get better."
The senior Maccagnini placed seventh with a time of 13:22.6 which was more than a minute faster that she ran in placing 21st at last season's Waves Invitational (14:28.7). Dating back to last season, Maccagnini has been the Trojans' top finisher in four consecutive meets.
USC's second finisher, in her first race for the Trojans, was graduate transfer Helena Teixeira-Dasilva who placed 11th with a time of 13:41.4. The next Trojan to finish was junior Lucia Rabolli who placed 15th with a time of 13:51.4. Rabolli placed 31st last season with a time of 14:44.5.
USC's final two scoring runners were senior Giovanna Pisano and redshirt junior Jacqueline Duarte. Pisano, in her first cross country race since the 2022 season, finished 19th with a time of 14:07.7. Duarte placed 21st with a time of 14:18.3. Last year at the Waves Invitational, Duarte placed 64th with a time of 16:02.6.
Right behind them was graduate transfer Olivia Schmitt, who placed 22nd with a time of 14:19.1. The Trojans' final scoring runner was sophomore Angelina Vasquez who placed 31st with a time of 14:40.5.
USC's remaining runners were sophomore Haley Spoden (36th, PR of 14:49.7), sophomore transfer Isabella Duarte (46th, 15:29.8) and graduate student Alyssa Blockburger (57th, PR of 16:24.2).
USC's next meet will be on Saturday, Sept. 28 when it competes at the Dave Murray Invitational (6K) in Tucson, Ariz.
