KEY PLAYERS:
- Three Trojans posted hat tricks, including a new member to the club, as senior Maddie Dora, sophomore Emma Bunting and freshman Kaylee Fravert each earned three goals. This is Dora's fifth hat trick of the year, as she has compiled 23 goals in five games this year. Bunting accomplished her second hat trick of the season, while Fravert became the 35th member of the hat trick club.
- In the circle, sophomore Anna Regan shined again with nine draw controls.
- On the defensive side, three players recorded multiple caused turnovers, with senior Catherine Lord, senior Alexis Niblock and freshman Coco Hauck all forcing two turnovers. Niblock tied junior Kate Gerrity for the lead in ground balls, as they both picked up four.
- Sophomore Annie Shields safeguarded the net in this one, as she allowed 14 goals, and had seven saves in the winning decision.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- There was never a decisive winner for the majority of the game, as each quarter was decided by one goal. However, the Trojans took the tightly contested matchup by winning three of the four quarters of play. It all started with a 5-4 advantage in the first, as the usual culprits found their mark. Dora opened the scoring at 11:40, with E. Bunting following suit with a goal a little over two minutes later. The star of the quarter would be redshirt senior Isabelle Vitale, as she collected three points with one goal and two assists. USC would own the advantage in the late stages of the quarter, as it was 4-4 with a goal from the Sun Devils at 3:29. However, Dora responded with her second of the afternoon to win the first quarter.
- The second mainly focused on defense, as the Trojans scored three and ASU scored two. A large portion of that would be both teams turning the ball over four times a piece and limiting the shots to 15 total (ASU; 6, USC; 9). The Women of Troy would take an 8-6 advantage heading into the break after senior Christina Gagnon notched the final two goals of the quarter.
- The offensive returned in the third, as both teams posted scoring runs throughout. USC scored four-straight (two by Fravert) to make it 12-7, and the Sun Devils followed that with four of their own. During that span, the Trojans were limited in success, as the ASU goalkeeper racked up seven saves in the quarter.
- Only one goal separated the teams heading into the fourth (12-11), but the Trojans were able to take control with the first four scores of the quarter. Those scores came from E. Bunting-Fravert-junior Casey Roberts-redshirt sophomore Hannah Barron in succession. ASU would score the next three, but it wouldn't matter as USC claimed it 16-14.
UP NEXT: The Women of Troy hit the road for a trip down south, as they conclude their conference reunions with a matchup against San Diego State at 1 p.m. in San Diego, Calif.
GAME NOTES:
- The Trojans are 78-21 in home games and are now 5-2 at Dignity Health Sports Park.
- USC is 13-2 against the Sun Devils.
- The Women of Troy are 51-10 against current Big 12 members.
- Freshman Kaylee Fravert became the first freshman to post a hat trick since then-redshirt freshman Isabelle Vitale did it against Virginia in the NCAA tournament on May 13, 2022. She is the first true freshman to do it since then-freshman Maddie Dora scored three against Michigan on April 3, 2022.
