The Trojans dropped their first conference dual of the season, with the 4-2 defeat
CHAMPAIGN, ILL. – USC men's tennis (9-5, 3-1 Big Ten) suffered its first Big Ten Conference loss of the season, 4-2, falling to No. 23 Illinois on Sunday, March 23.
The Trojans entered the match coming off a quick 4-1 victory over Northwestern in Evanston Friday afternoon. However, they had no answer for the Illini, who met the Trojans blow-for-blow in doubles play. The freshman duo of Nathan Trouve and Matteo Morazzi logged a victory on court three for USC, but the Illini won the next two points on courts one and two, giving them the doubles point.
In singles play, the Trojans struggled to gain traction. The Illini grabbed a quick, straight-set victory on court four to extend their lead to two points. Freshman Connor Church responded with a win on court six to give the Trojans their first point of the match but was matched by No. 62 William Mroz who took Illinois' third point on court two. Senior Karl Lee's victory on court five kept USC within striking distance, but No. 16 Kenta Miyoshi clinched the match for the Illini with a win on center court.
Following the loss, USC will return home for another weekend of conference play. They will face off against the Washington Huskies on Friday, March 28 at David X. Marks Tennis Stadium. First serve will take place at 5 p.m.
