USC Rowing Posts Strong Showings At San Diego Crew Classic

USC’s Novice 8+ won the Laurel Korholz Trophy with an eight-second advantage over Washington.
SAN DIEGO, CALIF. — The USC rowing team wrapped up the San Diego Crew Classic with solid performances across the board at Mission Bay. The Trojans' Novice 8+ took first place in the Laurel Korholz Trophy final with a dominating eight-second finish over a tough Washington boat that had edged out the Trojans in yesterday's heat.
In other action, the Varsity 8+ finished fifth in a competitive Jessop-Whittier/Cal Cup A Final with a time of 6:38.751 after remaining in contention through the first 750 meters. Defending champion Texas edged out Washington to take the championship. USC's Varsity 4+ was sixth in the Karen Plumleigh Cortney Cup race with a time of 7:35.882. Washington narrowly beat out Texas to take first place. In the 2V8+ Jackie Ann Stitt Hungness Trophy race, USC placed fourth with a time of 6:45.652 after battling with the three leaders in the opening stretch of the regatta. The Trojans settled into a rhythm that kept them ahead of UCLA by nearly four seconds.

After a promising Saturday second-place heat performance, the Trojans' top boat faced stiff competition in Sunday's final. USC remained in contention in the early stages of the race. After sitting half a boat length behind Lanes 1, 2 and 4 at the 750-meter mark, the Trojans ultimately crossed the finish line at 6:38.748. Top-ranked boats Texas and Washington battled it out in the front, but Texas pulled seats ahead to win the Cup.

The Trojans slipped away from the top three boats to contend with UCLA, and USC held the upper hand into the finish line with a four-second finish over the Bruins. While the Saturday heat came down to two-tenths of a second, USC handily held open water well inside the final 250 meters, earning the Laurel Korholz Trophy with a time of 6:58.
