USC Men’s Golf Ends Southern Highlands Collegiate in Ninth
March 04, 2025 | Men's Golf
Freshman Jack Buchanan fired a final round 67 (-5) to propel himself 28 spots into a tie for 12th
LAS VEGAS – USC's men's golf fell one stroke short of a top-five finish, ending the Southern Highlands Collegiate ninth out of 15 teams at 20-over par after a five-under-par final day on Tuesday, Mar. 4 at the Southern Highlands Golf Club.
"We beat some good teams this week," head coach Mark Hankins said. "We made a nice move up the leaderboard the final two rounds and just fell short today or really making a statement. This will definitely help us moving forward as we compete with the best in the Big Ten and country."
The Trojans were propelled on the final day by freshman Jack Buchanan, as he started the day with three straight birdies on way to posting his second-best round of the season with a five under-par, 67. Buchanan's score paved the way for a five-under team total in the final round as the team counted a 67-71-72-73 (283, -5) on the final day.
Buchanan found his groove on the course early, opening his day with three straight birdies and an eagle on hole No. 9. The freshman's five-under-par final round jumped him 28 spots as he ended the tournament tied for 12th individually. This is Buchanan's third top-25 finish of the season.
"I was playing good all week, just got some unlucky breaks which maybe prohibited me from going low and shooting good scores in the first two rounds," Buchanan said. "It was nice to put a good round together in the final round, I ended tied for 12th, so it was a nice way to finish."
Senior Gavin Aurilia in the final round, carded a 71 (-1) for his ninth round under par this season, as he had six birdies to five bogeys. Four of those birdies came on the front nine, but so did three bogeys. The senior ended up tied for 71st at 14-over par.
Freshman Jaden Dumdumaya ended his run at the Southern Highlands Collegiate in a tie for 54th at 11-over par. The freshman was even-par on the day, as an eagle on hole No. 13 highlighted his round.
Junior Antonio Safa finished tied for 28th as he was six-over par for the tournament. On the final day, the junior posted a one-over 73. Sophomore Jack Jerge finished out the scoring for the Trojans as he posted an 80 (+8) on the final day and ended his tournament tied for 39th.
USC returns to the same place where it won its season opener, as the Trojans take on the Cowboy Classic on Monday, Mar. 31, through Tuesday, Apr. 1, at the Ak-Chin Southern Dunes G.C. in Maricopa, Ariz.
