March 06, 2025 | Women's Rowing
The Trojans host first races on home water under the guidance of head coach Kelsie Chaudoin
LOS ANGELES — USC women's rowing is set to kick off the spring season — its first under the direction of head coach Kelsie Chaudoin — with a rivalry clash against UCLA. The Trojans' season opener will see the Bruins come to USC's home waters at the Port of Los Angeles for a race day that kicks off at 8:40 a.m. on Saturday (March. 8). USC's seniors will be looking to claim their fourth straight team win over the Bruins with this weekend's rivalry showdown.
Gates to the USC Boathouse (400 Yacht Street) at the Port of Los Angeles open at 7:45 a.m. for fans, with race action kicking off at 8:40 a.m. Varsity Four races will take place first, followed by Varsity Eight races.
Saturday's Race Schedule:
8:40 a.m. — Third Varsity Four (3V4+)
9:00 a.m. — Second Varsity Four (2V4+)
9:20 a.m. — Varsity Four (V4+)
9:40 a.m. — Third and Fourth Varsity Eights (3V8+/4V8+))
10:00 a.m. — Second Varsity Eight (2V8+)
10:20 a.m. — Varsity Eight (V8+)
This is the third consecutive season in which USC has opened spring competition with a regatta with UCLA, and the Trojans will be looking to beat the Bruins for a fourth straight time. Last year, USC and UCLA were joined by LMU for a season-opening tri-meet in Marina del Rey. In that regatta, USC won the varsity eight and third varsity eight races and was the winner of the event. In 2023, USC and UCLA had a season-opening dual at the Port of Los Angeles, where the Trojans posted a 7-0 sweep. In 2022, the teams met in Marina del Rey, with USC claiming a 3.5-3 victory. UCLA last won a USC-UCLA dual in 2021 in Marina del Rey.
Also on the line at Saturday's race day is the Amy Fuller Kearney-Lori Guerrero Azbill Trophy. The Trojans claimed the inaugural trophy in the 2022 UCLA Dual and has continued to control the award as winners in 2023 and 2024. This trophy honors long-time late former UCLA coach Amy Fuller Kearny and former USC assistant coach Lori Guerrero Azbill. The presentation of the Amy Fuller Kearney-Lori Guerrero Azbill Trophy for the UCLA-USC competition will occur immediately after the meet.
Additionally, the USC-UCLA Dual puts 10 points up for grabs in the year-long all-sports competition between crosstown rivals USC and UCLA, the Crosstown Cup, which has been awarded annually since 2001-02 to the school with the most successful athletic year against the other. Points are awarded to each Trojan-Bruin head-to-head contest winner, and the Crosstown Cup is awarded to the school with the most points at year's end. USC has won the Crosstown Cup 13 times, including a span of five consecutive years from 2007-08 to 2011-12. Competition was suspended in 2020-21 due to the coronavirus pandemic, making it a total of 21 complete seasons of competition, with USC leading the all-time series 13-9 through 2023-24. USC is currently leading the 2024-25 Crosstown Cup race 40-20.
