
USC Rowing Sets Up In Indianapolis For Racing At First Big Ten Championships

The Trojans will have six boats in the mix in the program’s first-ever Big Ten Championships competition.
INDIANAPOLIS — The USC women's rowing team is set for race action in Indianapolis, Ind., this week for the program's first competition at the Big Ten Championships. A first-year member of the conference and under the direction of head coach Kelsie Chaudoin, the No. 23 Trojans are among seven ranked teams in an 11-team field racing in the championship event on May 17-18 at Indianapolis Rowing Center.
USC will have six boats racing in the two-day affair, which begins with heats on Saturday (May 17) and culminates in finals on Sunday (May 18). Saturday's heats will be streamed on B1G+ and the FOX Sports App. Sunday's finals will air live on the Big Ten Network.
USC's first races on Saturday will be the NCAA boats, beginning with the 1V8+ boat in Heat #2 at 8:12 a.m. ET. Next, the 2V8+ boat hits the water for Heat #2 at 8:32 a.m. ET followed by the 1V4+ in Heat #1Â at 8:42Â a.m. ET. After that, USC's 2V4+ goes in Heat #2 at 9:12 a.m. ET. The 3V4+ boat will be in Heat #1 at 9:22Â a.m. ET, with the final heat of the day featuring USC's 3V8+ in Heat #1 at 9:42Â a.m. ET.
All boats move on to competition on Sunday, with the top three Saturday finishers in each heat racing in grand finals. Prior to each grand final, there will be petite final races in each event, featuring heat finishers four, five and six. At the 2024 Big Ten Championships, Michigan was the conference champion in an eight-team field. Indiana finished second overall, ahead of third-place Rutgers. Now with the addition of USC, UCLA and Washington to the Big Ten, the 2025 championships feature 11 teams. The Huskies are the top-ranked team in the field a No. 2 in the nation. Rutgers ranks No. 7, and Michigan is No. 10 as the teams set up for 2025 Big Ten Championships competition. Also currently nationally ranked are No. 16 Indiana, No. 17 Ohio State, No. 23 USC and No. 25 UCLA.

USC had four boats cross first in their respective races at the Oregon State Invitational out at Dexter Lake Reservoir. With glassy water and gray skies, the Trojans demonstrated their strength across various categories. USC's 3V8+Â (Coxswain: Annie Clark, Stroke: Lucy Schofield, 7: Rhese Abrams, 6: Mimi Twomey, 5: Olivia Kelly, 4: Brecken Cullinan, 3: Grace Peacock, 2: Shayna McCarthy, Bow: Raquel Bell), 2V4+(Coxswain: Sage Saperstein, Stroke: Chloe Sorensen, 3: Grace Eamer, 2: Zoe Muhlner, Bow: Kiki George), V4+Â (Coxswain: Ellen Ariathurai, Stroke: Gracie Regan, 3: Maeve Clifford, 2: Olivia Wilson, Stroke: Abbie Diemer)Â and 3V4+Â (Coxswain: Roxy Andras, Stroke: Shayna McCarthy, 3: Brecken Cullinan, 2: Belle Bordier, Bow: Raquel Bell)Â all secured first-place finishes. Additionally, the 2V8+ and V8+ boats delivered competitive performances in their races against boats from Oregon State, Sacramento State and San Diego. While the day featured several close races with the Beavers on their home waters, the 3V8+ and V4+ proved especially dominant. Both boats held significant separation against the competition for more than half of their respective races.
FINISHING FIRST IN FLORIDA
USC made the most of its cross-country journey to Sarasota, Fla., with a busy two days of competition at the Big Ten Invitational in its most recent races. During the second round of racing taking place on the first day, USC had three boats notch first-place finishes — 3V8+ (Coxswain: Annie Clark, Stroke: Lucy Schofield, 7: Martina Scarpello, 6: Zoe Muhlner, 5: Olivia Kelly, 4: Brecken Cullinan, 3: Rhese Abrams, 2: Shayna McCarthy, Bow: Raquel Bell), 2V4+ (Coxswain: Sage Saperstein, Stroke: Evita Franckevica, 3: Abbie Diemer, 2: Grace Eamer, Bow: Kiki George) and 2V8+ (Coxswain: Isabella Pedone, Stroke: Solange Barbier, 7: Raquel Rodriguez, 6: Chiara Meakin, 5: Isabella Korellis, 4: Regan Mary Cronin, 3: Isabella Lysaker, 2: Julia Karten, Bow: Haleen McMahan). The next day, it was the 3V8+ that came through with it second first-place finish for the Trojans on a windy second day of racing at Nathan Benderson Park.
STRONG SHOWING AT SDCC
USC wrapped up the San Diego Crew Classic with solid performances across the board at Mission Bay. The Trojans' Novice 8+ took first place in the Laurel Korholz Trophy final with a dominating eight-second win ahead of the second-place finisher. In other action, the Varsity 8+ finished fifth in a competitive Jessop-Whittier/Cal Cup  A Final with a time of 6:38.751 after remaining in contention through the first 750 meters. Defending champion Texas edged out Washington to take the championship. USC's Varsity 4+ was sixth in the Karen Plumleigh Cortney Cup race with a time of 7:35.882. Washington narrowly beat out Texas to take first place. In the 2V8+ Jackie Ann Stitt Hungness Trophy race, USC placed fourth with a time of 6:45.652 after battling with the three leaders in the opening stretch of the regatta. The Trojans settled into a rhythm that kept them ahead of UCLA by nearly four seconds.
BEATING THE BRUINS
On March 8, USC defeated crosstown rival UCLA in the annual head-to-head dual for a fifth straight time and improved to 23-1 all-time over the Bruins at the Port of Los Angeles. The Women of Troy collected a 20-3 victory with wins by the 1V8+, 2V8+, 3V8+ and the 1V4+. The dual victory also secured USC's possession of the Amy Fuller Kearney-Lori Guerrero Azbill Trophy. The Trojans claimed the inaugural trophy in the 2022 UCLA Dual and has continued to control the award as winners in 2023, 2024 and 2025. This trophy honors long-time late former UCLA coach Amy Fuller Kearny and former USC assistant coach Lori Guerrero Azbill.Â
