USC Track and Field Sends 12 Trojans to NCAA Indoor Championships

Trojans will compete across nine events at Randal Tyson Track Center
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The USC track and field team returns to the national stage on Friday for the start of NCAA Indoor Championships. Nine individuals and both relay teams will compete for national titles with preliminary rounds on Friday and finals on Saturday.
LAST TIME OUT
The Trojans brought home six event titles at Big Ten Indoor Championships, recording two program records, twelve top-three finishes and three Big Ten meet records. The Women of Troy finished in third place with 81 points and the men finished in sixth place with 44 points. The Trojans swept the 400m and 200m races highlighted once again by a standout performance by Garrett Kaalund in the 200m. His new program record of 20.06 is the No. 2 time in NCAA history and No. 3 in the world all-time. He also broke the meet and facility record to bring home the gold in the event. Madison Whyte ran a meet record and facility record in the women's 400m with a time of 51.31 to claim the event title.
MEN'S NCAA QUALIFIERS
Three individuals will compete on the men's side for the Trojans. Garrett Kaalund returns within striking distance of the men's indoor 200m collegiate record. Edward Nketia, with three personal records this season alone in the 60m, will look to add another in the field of 16. Jack Stadlman, new USC freshman recordholder in the men's 400m, snuck in at the No. 16 spot in the qualifying list. He is the sole freshman from USC running an individual race on the national stage. The men's 4x400 relay team currently consists of Jacob Andrews, Garrett Kaalund, Wiaan Martin and Jack Stadlman with Jaelen Knox and Nickolas Miller slotted as alternates.
WOMEN'S NCAA QUALIFIERS
Mia Brahe-Pedersen will race her first NCAA championships, aiming for another personal record this season in the 200m. Reigning 60m national champion Dajaz DeFrand returns in search of another ring as the only Trojan scheduled for three races (60m, 200m, 4x400). Ashley Erasmus will compete in shot put, coming off her new school record at Big Ten Championships. Big Ten champion Christine Mallard will race in the 200m. Brianna Selby is headed to the indoor nationals track for the first time in the 60m with the Big Ten title already in hand. Madison Whyte holds the top spot in the NCAA for the women's 400m, eyeing the national crown on Saturday. The current women's 4x400 relay team is the Big Ten champion team of Christine Mallard, Madison Mosby, Dajaz DeFrand and Madison Whyte with Joelle Trepagnier and Rachael Uvieghara as alternates.
SEASON RECAP
The Trojans close out a season of 35 event wins, five school records and two freshman records, looking to add more on Saturday. Both teams achieved their highest USTFCCCA ranking of the season on Feb. 10 with the women at No. 4 and the men at No. 16. The women were ranked in the top 10 for five consecutive weeks, coming in at No. 8 in the most recent checkpoint.
The season started at the Spokane Showcase where Trojans shined in the 300m. Garrett Kaalund tied the second-fastest time in NCAA history. Madison Whyte recorded a first-place finish and an all-time top-8 time in the NCAA in 36.33. The Women of Troy swept the top-3 spots in the 60m as the Trojans racked up a total of eight wins.
The following week, the men were the ones to sweep the 60m at the Stan Scott Invite as the Trojans achieved eight wins on the day once again. The men's 4x400 relay team clocked the second-fastest time in school history at 3:02.55 to close out the day at Texas Tech.
The team brought home the most wins of any meet with ten at the New Mexico Collegiate Classic. Kaalund put on a show in his 200m season opener, breaking the school record for the first time this season and setting the world lead. Mia Brahe-Pedersen impressed with a new personal record in the 200m at 22.85, coming back from a freshman year of injury.
The Trojans closed out the regular season with two freshman records at the Don Kirby Elite Invite. On day one, Jack Stadlman set a new freshman time of 45.51 in the men's 400m. The following day, Cordial Vann tied the freshman record in the men's 60m in 6.60.
