LOS ANGELES — No. 12 USC women's tennis team continued its strong run at home with a 4-1 victory over No. 21 Washington on Friday afternoon at Marks Tennis Stadium.
The Trojans (14-5, 7-1) improved to 7-0 at home this spring, using a decisive doubles point and three singles wins to secure the ranked conference victory.Â
USC opened the match by claiming the doubles point, taking courts one and three. The No. 26 ranked pair of Lily Fairclough and Krisha Mahendran set the tone with a dominant 6-1 win over Washington's No. 75 pair of Erika Matsuda and Carina Syrtveit on center court. After a Huskies win on court two evened things up, Emma Charney and Immi Haddad clinched the point with a 7-5 victory on court three.
In singles, the Trojans wasted little time building momentum. No. 58 Emma Charney struck first, cruising to a 6-2, 6-0 win on court four to give USC a 2-0 lead.
Washington answered on court two, where No. 70 Reece Carter defeated USC's Immi Haddad 6-4, 6-1 to cut the deficit to 2-1.
USC responded with back-to-back wins to close out the match. No. 23 Jana Hossam delivered a steady 6-2, 6-3 victory over No. 76 Erika Matsuda on court one, pushing the Trojans within one point of clinching.
The deciding point came from freshman No. 123 Eugenia Zozaya on court three, who battled through a three-set thriller to defeat Alexia Jacobs 6-2, 4-6, 7-5, sealing the 4-1 victory for USC.
