Trojans look to stay undefeated at home this spring.
LOS ANGELES — The No. 12 USC women's tennis team returns to Marks Tennis Stadium this weekend to host a pair of Big Ten opponents, welcoming No. 21 Washington on Friday and Oregon on Saturday. First serve is scheduled for noon PT on Friday against the Huskies, while Saturday's battle against the Ducks will begin at 1 p.m. PT.Â
The Trojans (13-5, 6-1) enter the weekend riding momentum from a 4-2 victory over No. 17 UCLA, highlighted by clutch singles play throughout the lineup. USC has been dominant at home this spring, holding a perfect 6-0 record at Marks Tennis Stadium.
Leading the way for the Trojans are nationally ranked singles players No. 23 Jana Hossam, No. 58 Emma Charney and No. 123 Eugenia Zozaya. In doubles, USC features three ranked pairs in No. 26 Krisha Mahendran/Lily Fairclough, No. 39 Jana Hossam/Lily Fairclough and No. 40 Dani Borruel/Lily Fairclough.
Zozaya continues to shine in her freshman campaign, recently earning her second Big Ten Freshman of the Week honor after clinching the Trojans' win over UCLA last week.
Friday's matchup brings a tough test in No. 21 Washington (15-3), which enters the contest following a 4-0 sweep of Illinois. The Huskies boast ranked singles players No. 70 Reece Carter and No. 76 Erika Matsuda, along with the No. 75 doubles team of Matsuda and Carina Syrtveit. Despite Washington's strong season, USC holds a commanding 29-7 lead in the all-time series. After being knocked out by Washington in last season's Big Ten Championship Tournament, Friday presents the Trojans with a chance to even the score.Â
Friday's match against Washington includes a special promotion, with the first 50 fans receiving a free USC visor.
The Trojans will turn around to face Oregon on Saturday. The Ducks (11-8) will first take on UCLA on Friday before coming over to Marks Stadium. Oregon enters the weekend looking to snap a three-match losing streak after a narrow 4-3 loss to Northwestern. USC has historically controlled the series, owning a 27-2 advantage over the Ducks. Currently the Ducks are unranked and do not have any ranked singles players or duos.Â
With postseason play approaching, USC (currently tied for second in the Big Ten standings), aims to position itself to clinch a share of the regular-season title in the coming weeks.
