No. 18 USC Baseball Blanks Nevada, 8-0, in Series Opener

LOS ANGELES – The No. 18 USC baseball team posted its NCAA-leading ninth shutout of the year on Thursday night, blanking Nevada 8-0 in the series opener at Dedeaux Field.
Mason Edwards tossed six scoreless innings and the Trojan offense jumped on the Wolf Pack for eight runs in the first three innings as USC moves to 39-12 on the year. Nevada, which had not been shut out all year, falls to 23-22.
Adrian Lopez led the game off with a home run to set the tone for USC, as the Trojans hit three homers and scored four runs in the first inning. Jack Basseer also hit a two-run homer in the first and Andrew Lamb hit a solo-shot on the very next pitch.
Basseer ended the day 3-for-3 at the plate, adding two doubles to his homer, and Lopez went 2-for-3 in the leadoff spot.
After a run in the second, the Trojans scored three in the third, with Walter Urbon capping the scoring with a two-run homer to right. It was the freshman Urbon's first career home run.
Edwards was his usual dominant self as he moved to 8-0 with the victory. The junior lefty struck out 10 batters to mark the 11th time in 13 starts he has posted double-digit strikeouts. Edwards gave up just four hits and walked one as he lowered his season ERA to 1.61 with the scoreless outing.
The 10-strikeout day ran Edwards' NCAA-leading season K total to 142, giving him the ninth highest single-season total in USC history.
Ben Cushnie tossed 2.0 scoreless frames out of the bullpen, entering the game with the bases loaded and no outs in the seventh, only to get out of the jam with two strikeouts and a lineout. Cushnie allowed just one hit in a scoreless eighth inning before Rohan Kasanagottu closed things out in the ninth.
