USC Men’s Golf Sits in Third at the Bombs Darts Birds Collegiate

All eight Trojans finished under par through two rounds.
CHANDLER, Ariz. — The No. 22 USC Men's Golf Team sits in third place out of 13 teams after two rounds of play at the Bombs Darts Birds Collegiate, held at the Whirlwind Golf Club in Chandler, Ariz. on Monday.
Bolstered by two scorers in the top 10 and three in the top 20, the host team Trojans fired a 543 (-33) at the par-72, 7,334-yard track. USC spent the majority of the day in the top three chasing Santa Clara — the current leader with a 541 (-35) — and is one stroke back of second-place New Mexico State heading into tomorrow. No. 24 Stanford (-27) and Arkansas State (-23) round out the top five teams.
Despite 100-degree heat throughout the day, all eight Trojans finished under par and the team collectively had nine rounds in the 60s. Junior Jaden Dumdumaya is tied for the lead with a 132 (-12), while freshman William Hou joins Dumdumaya in the top 10 in a tie for eighth with a 135 (-9).
Dumdumaya is tied for the lead with a 132 (-12). The junior wasted no time rising to the top of the leaderboard after putting together a bogey-free 64 (-8) in the first round that tied for the best round of the day. His eagle on a long par-5, No. 2 set the tone for the day, as he finished with three more birdies on the front side before carding three birdies on the back side. In the second round, Dumdumaya took sole possession of first place with two birdies on the front side before finding trouble after making the turn with his first bogey of the afternoon on the par-4 No. 11. Despite another bogey on No. 14, Dumdumaya finished with three consecutive birdies on the back side for a 68 (-4).
Making his collegiate debut, William Hou is tied for eighth with a 135 (-9). The freshman fired a 66 (-6) in the first round with eight birdies and two bogeys, both of which came on the front side. Hou wrapped up the back side with five birdies to vault into the top 10. In the second round, Hou found trouble with two bogeys on the front side once again, yet he pushed his score under par with four birdies and just one bogey on the back side to fire a 69 (-3) in round two.
Competing as an individual in his USC debut, graduate senior Deitrek Gill started off strong and carded two rounds in the 60s to finish the day in a tie for 13th with a 136 (-8). This was the sixth time in his career that he had two rounds in the 60s to start off a tournament. Gill opened the front side with three birdies in the first five holes before running into trouble by bogeying the par-3 No. 6. But Gill recovered with consecutive birdies to finish the front side before finishing with one bogey and two birdies on the back side to fire a 67 (-5). In his second round, Gill found trouble with two bogeys in his first four holes, yet he managed to stay under par with an eagle on No. 2 and a birdie on the par-3 No. 3. On the back side, Gill had three birdies and one bogey to finish with a 69 (-3).
Giving USC three scorers in the top 20, senior Nicolas Dominguez wrapped up the day in a tie for 20th with a 138 (-6). In the first round, Dominguez had two birdies on the front side and three birdies on the back side with just one bogey on the par-4 No. 14 to fire a 68 (-4). The senior found trouble at the beginning of his second round with three bogeys in the first seven holes. Yet after a birdie on No. 9, Dominguez had a bogey-free back side and pushed his score under par with three birdies to fire a 70 (-2).
Also competing as an individual in his USC debut, sophomore Joshua Hong is tied for 29th with a 139 (-5). In the first round, Hong started strong with two birdies on the front side before finding trouble with four bogeys on the back side. An eagle on the par-5 No. 12 and a birdie on No. 17 pushed his score under par with a 71 (-1). Hong fared better in the second round as he fired a 68 (-4) with six birdies and two bogeys.
Junior Jack Buchanan is tied for 41st with a 141 (-3). The junior fired a 71 (-1) in the first round with four birdies and three bogeys before faring better in the second round with a 70 (-2). Buchanan opened the front side with two birdies before finding trouble as he made the turn with back-to-back bogeys on Nos. 9 and 10. However, he pushed his score under par with two birdies on the back side.
Sophomore Hendrik-Luka Schmitz had an eventful collegiate debut by firing a 74 (+2) in the first round before bouncing back with a 67 (-5) in round two to tie for 41st with a 141 (-3). Schmitz recorded two double-bogeys and a bogey in the first round before wrapping up the round with three birdies in the final five holes. He then carried that momentum into round two by firing a bogey-free 67 (-5) that had three birdies on the back side and two on the front side. All told, he rose 28 places in the second round.
Competing as an individual, Raghav Gulati is tied for 51st with a 142 (-2) after firing 71s in both rounds. He had three birdies and two bogeys in the first round, then had two birdies and one bogey in the second round.
