USC Men’s Golf Ties for Fifth at the Bombs Darts Birds Collegiate

Graduate senior Deitrek Gill led the way with a 203 (-13) to tie for seventh.
CHANDLER, Ariz. — The No. 22 USC Men's Golf Team tied for fifth place out of 13 teams at the Bombs Darts Birds Collegiate, held at the Whirlwind Golf Club in Chandler, Ariz. on Tuesday.
USC entered the final round in third place and within striking distance of Santa Clara. However, the team found trouble on the back nine of the par-72, 7,334-yard course and fell back into fifth with an 830 (-34). Santa Clara won the tournament with an 814 (-50), while Arkansas State's Jake Lile tied USC alum Antonio Safa's tournament record with a 199 (-17) to earn medalist honors.
Three Trojans finished in the top 25, led by graduate senior Deitrek Gill, who tied for seventh with a 203 (-13) while competing as an individual. Senior Nicolas Dominguez joined Gill as the only two Trojans to move up the leaderboard on Tuesday. He tied for 17th with a 206 (-10) as USC's top lineup player.
Entering the day outside the top 10, Gill fired a team-best 67 (-5) in the final round and moved into the top three at the turn. Gill's front side was superb with five birdies to just one bogey, yet back-to-back bogeys on Nos. 10-11 made him fall back to seventh. He had three birdies on the back side for eight on the day, which tied the team high.
Gill's Trojan debut was one of the best tournaments of his career. The Pacific transfer's 203 was one stroke off matching his career high, while Gill had three rounds in the 60s for the second time in his career. This was his eighth career top-10 finish.
Rising up three spots to crack the top 20, Dominguez had the second-best round of the day by firing a 68 (-4). The senior had four birdies and just one bogey on the front side before finding trouble with a bogey on No. 10 and a double-bogey on No. 11. Yet he pushed his score farther under par with four birdies in his final six holes to tie his career high with a 206 (-10).
Junior Jaden Dumdumaya finished in a tie for 23rd with a 207 (-9) after firing a 75 (+3) in the final round. Dumdumaya entered the day in the lead and remained in first with back-to-back birdies to open the round. However, he found trouble with a bogey on No. 3, then a double-bogey on No. 10 followed by a bogey on No. 11 that took him out of contention. He wrapped up the back side with one birdie on No. 12 and another double-bogey on No. 14.
Competing as an individual, sophomore Joshua Hong fired a 70 (-2) and finished in a tie for 29th with a 209 (-7). Hong put together a steady tournament and was one of three Trojans to have all three rounds under par. The sophomore had two birdies and one bogey on the front side and three birdies and two bogeys on the back side. His 209 tied for the second-best tournament of his collegiate career.
Freshman William Hou finished in a tie for 34th with a 210 (-6) after firing a 75 (+3) in the final round. Hou found trouble on the front side with two bogeys and a bogey on No. 10 after making the turn. He finished with four bogeys and one birdie, which came on the par-3 No. 15.
Also finishing his Trojan debut, Hendrik-Luka Schmitz tied for 45th place with a 212 (-4) after firing a 71 (-1). He kept his score under par with two birdies to just one bogey on the front side, however, consecutive bogeys on Nos. 10-11 brought his score over par. He wrapped up the back side with two more birdies, giving him two rounds under par for the tournament.
Rounding out the Trojan lineup players, junior Jack Buchanan tied for 59th place with a 214 (-2) after firing a 73 (+1) in the final round. He had three birdies on the day but found trouble on the back side in a three-hole stretch where he had two bogeys and a double bogey.
Competing as an individual, Raghav Gulati tied for 67th with an even-par 216.
