LOS ANGELES - The No. 4-ranked USC men's volleyball team?behind 11 kills by senior outside hitter Eli Fairfield and 10 kills by junior All-American opposite hitter Brook Billings?beat Loyola-Chicago, 30-19, 30-21, 30-26, on Friday (March 9) in the USC North Gym.
The Trojans?playing their first non-conference match of the season?improved to 10-4 overall, while Loyola-Chicago fell to 11-4.
Senior outside hitter Trevor Julian had a match-high 6 aces and hit .455 for USC, while senior middle blocker Donny Killian hit .714 and sophomore middle blocker Josh Day hit .462 and had a team-best 4 blocks.
For Loyola-Chicago, sophomore outside hitter Justin Schnor had 11 kills, sophomore middle hitter Dan Haas hit .455 and had 4 blocks and senior middle hitter Rick Sullivan added 4 blocks.
In each of the first 2 games, USC opened up quick 4-0 leads which it never relinquished. In the third game, the Ramblers led 14-8 before Billings was reinserted into the match after being pulled midway through the second game The Trojans scored 7 consecutive points to assume control.
USC outhit Loyola-Chicago, .302 to .136, and had 12 aces to the Ramblers' 1.
The Trojans resume Mountain Pacific Sports Federation play with their next match on March 16 at Hawaii.
