No. 2 Trojans Tack Up 10th Win With Balanced Effort Against UC San Diego

Twelve Trojans score in the 15-2 victory in USC’s home waters.
LOS ANGELES, CALIF. — The No. 2 USC men's water polo team opened a busy home stretch with a balanced win in tonight's clash with No. 13 UC San Diego. A grand total of 12 Trojans scored in the win, while the USC defense held the Tritons scoreless in the first and third periods of play en route to a 15-2 USC victory. The win improves USC to 10-0 overall as the Trojans now set up to host the 2017 Mountain Pacific Invitational, which starts up tomorrow (Sept. 22).
In tonight's tilt with the Tritons, the Trojans drummed up the first eight goals of the game, with Lazar Pasuljevic delivering two goals in that rally. After Pasuljevic's first goal made it a 4-0 lead at the end of the first, Sam Slobodien served up the assist on a blast from Blake Edwards before snagging a rebound and finishing it off with a spin and strike to make it 6-0 Trojans. UC San Diego would break its silence with a swift backhand in the final minute of the first half, only to see USC manufacture the next seven goals of the contest. Slobodien's second came during that surge, as did Edwards' In the last minute of the third, Danny Leong would unleash a searing strike to lift USC ahead 11-1, and USC was well on its way to its 10th victory of the year. Along the way, redshirt freshman Luke Wyatt tallied his first career goal as a Trojan. On the defensive end, McQuin Baron went the distance and collected 10 saves to help anchor the win.
USC will kick off the Mountain Pacific Invitational tomorrow (Sept. 22) with a 1 p.m. meeting against San José State. Action continues on Saturday (Sept. 23) morning as bracket play comes to a close, setting up the afternoon semifinal matches. On Sunday (Sept. 24), USC hosts the placement games, culminating in a 2:30 p.m. title match here at Uytengsu Aquatics Center. For the full schedule, visit the tournament central page.
