No. 3 USC Races To 12-Stroke Lead After Stanford Intercollegiate First Round
October 19, 2018 | Women's Golf, Features
Abdulghany posts collegiate best 67, Nam matches it as Trojan duo tie for lead.
Sophomore Alyaa Abdulghany posted a career-best 67 while freshman Malia Nam matched it, leading four Trojans under par and five who were even or better as the No. 3 USC women's golf team took a 12-stroke lead after the Stanford Intercollegiate first round on Friday (Oct. 19).
Â
The Trojans combined for a season-best 12-under 272 – tied for the fourth-best round in program history -- to race to a 12-stroke lead as USC looks for its second win in a row and its fourth at this event. Host Stanford is second at even 284, Northwestern and Pepperdine tied for third at 4-over 288.
Â
Only a 270 at the 2014 NCAAs and a pair of 271s at the 2015 ANNIKA Intercollegiate and the 2015 Arizona Wildcat Invitational have been better. Today's round ties USC's 2013 Stanford Intercollegiate best effort.
Â
Abdulghany established a collegiate best 67 (bettering her freshman season best 69) with six birdies and only a double bogey on 6 to spoil a clean card.
Â
"My round was great today and my game came together really nicely," Abdulghany said. "I made some great shots into the green and made the putts. I hope to keep the momentum going tomorrow.
Â
"The team did amazing today. Our games fit really well for this golf course so we just want to keep up the good shots off the tee and into the green."
Â
Abdulghany was matched today by Nam, who mixed seven birdies against three bogeys. She was 3-under going out, including a stretch of four birdies between 4 and 9. It is Nam's fifth round under 70 in seven outings this year.
Â
Sophomores Jennifer Chang and Amelia Garvey, the latter in her season debut, are tied for sixth at 2-under 69. As with Abdulghany, Garvey's round was a collegiate best. She was even at the turn but used four back 9 birdies among six on the day for her first sub-70 round in college.
Â
Chang posted a four-birdie day as she tries to extend her streak of nine straight top 15 finishes.
Â
Rounding out USC's efforts was sophomore Gabriela Ruffels' par 71, good for a tie for 16th. Coming off her first collegiate win, Ruffels mixed two birdies and two bogeys in her round.
Â
"We're very pleased with a lot of stuff that we did today," USC Head Coach Justin Silverstein said. "It's great that we were again able to produce a round that had our entire lineup in position to count for the day. After our practice round yesterday we knew that this golf course was getable if we drove it in play and had great speed on the greens. We're off super early tomorrow so we're looking to take advantage of having minimal wind for most of the round."
Â
USC begins its second round at 7:30 a.m. Saturday with Oregon and Denver.
