Senior captain sets a new career high in a key road victory for the Trojans.
LONG BEACH, CALIF. — The No. 1 USC men's water polo team racked up the first five goals of the game and never looked back, beating No. 8 host Long Beach State 13-6 in a road match in Long Beach today. Local product Zach D'Sa looked right at home, as the Trojans' senior captain drummed up a career-high four goals to lead all scorers in the USC victory. The Trojans improve to 23-1 overall with the win.
The Trojans made an early stand in shutting out their hosts for the first 11 minutes of action. Meanwhile, D'Sa had opened his account with a pair of goals, while Danny Leong, Jacob Mercep and Marko Vavic also delivered as USC kicked out to a 5-0 start after a 2-0 advantage in the first period. Long Beach State got on the board with 4:29 on the clock in the second, only to see Leong sizzle in his second minutes later. The 49ers got one more to go, but this time it was D'Sa with the answering shot, issuing his third goal of the day just 22 seconds after Long Beach State's second, making it 7-2 Trojans to close out the first half.
In the third, USC pressed onward, shrugging off a couple early strikes from the 49ers that closed the gap to 7-4 and resounding with a five-goal surge. Marin Dasic etched his mark on the USC scoresheet to spark the rally, which included a fourth goal from D'Sa, a second from Vavic and then a last-second ripper from Hannes Daube to beat the buzzer at the end of the third. Up 11-4 entering the fourth, USC saw Daube strike again, and then Sam Slobodien unleashed a blast that netted a 13-4 USC advantage three minutes into the final frame. Long Beach State would manage two goals in the closing stretch, but USC's command of the game never came into question, as freshman goalie Nic Porter finished up with six saves to anchor the 13-6 victory.
USC now returns home to Uytengsu Aquatics Center for another nonconference bout. The Trojans host No. 6 Pepperdine at 1 p.m. tomorrow (Oct. 20).
