October 29, 2018 | Women's Golf, Features
Trojans finish second, will face Arizona in match play semifinals.
Freshman Malia Nam fired a 1-under 71 to lead the No. 1 USC women's golf team to second place in the one-day stroke play round to open the 2018 East Lake Cup on Monday (Oct. 29) at the East Lake G.C. in Atlanta.
The Trojans, the defending East Lake Cup champions who enter this week's tournament on a two-event win streak, combined for an 8-over 296, 10 back of first-place Stanford (286). Arizona was third (299) with Alabama fourth (312).
USC will take on defending national champion Arizona in Tuesday's semifinal round while Stanford will face Alabama. USC's match begins at 9:55 a.m. PT.
Nam tied for third in the 20-woman field, three strokes back of Stanford's Albane Valenzuela, who eagled 18 to finish one stroke ahead of Arizona's Yu-Sang Hou. Stanford's Andrea Lee finished tied with Nam, who closed her round with a 4-under back 9 that included five birdies. It is Nam's sixth round under par and seventh of par or better in 10 collegiate rounds.
Sophomore Gabriela Ruffels took eighth at 2-over 74 with four birdies on the day while Jennifer Chang tied for ninth at 3-over 75 with three birdies.
Sophomore Alyaa Abdulghany tied for 12th at 4-over 76 and sophomore Amelia Garvey was 15th at 7-over 79. Garvey closed with two birdies over her final two holes.
"We obviously did not get off to the start we wanted today, but this group really battled on the back to put up a decent round," USC Head Coach Justin Silverstein said. "Driving the golf ball is one of our strengths and it was good to see us start driving it much better on the back. This group is really fired up to get back out there tomorrow and go up against the defending NCAA champions."
Chang will lead off USC's match play semifinal and will be followed by Abdulghany, Nam, Garvey and Ruffels.
