USC Women's Tennis Prevails in Comeback Victory over Washington

The No. 41 USC women's tennis team dug deep to pull out a 4-3 comeback victory over No. 47 Washington today (March 24) in Marks Tennis Stadium. Trojan senior captain Gabby Smith powered through a tense three-set victory to notch an important conference win in the books for Trojans. With the victory, USC improves to 9-6 overall and 2-3 in conference play.
Washington struck first as Hance/Prokopuik defeated USC's Smith/Van Alphen 6-1 on court two. Trojan tandem Branstine/Westby evened things out on court three with a win over Husky pair Fung/Kopcalic 6-3. Washington's Kobayashi/Wong would close out doubles with a close victory over USC's #43 Valdes/Kulikov 7-6 (3).
The Trojans entered singles with a one-point deficit.
The Huskies rolled with their momentum as #62 Vanessa Wong defeated USC's Rianna Valdes 6-3, 6-0 on court two. The Trojans began to find their groove as Constane Branstine took down Washington's Alexis Prokopuik 6-1, 6-2 on court four for a USC point. Over on court six, USC's Alexa Corcoleotes whipped up an important win with her swift 6-1, 6-3 victory over Katarina Kopcalic to tie up the overall match score at 2-2.
Trojan Madison Westby set USC up for victory with her 6-4, 6-3 win over Miki Kobayashi on court three. The Huskies fired back with a win on court five as Kenadi Hance defeated USC's Sydney Van Alphen 6-3, 6-2.
Now with the overall match score at 3-3, all the attention in Marks Stadium turned to court one where USC's No. 57 Gabby Smith was locked in battle against Washington's No. 16 Stacey Fung. After claiming the first set 6-4, Smith dropped the second set 6-1 to Fung. An intense deciding third set ensued where games were exchanged back and forth. Smith came out on top as she claimed the final set 7-5 to clinch the match for the Women of Troy.
USC will begin a three-match road trip by making their way to Malibu, Calif. on April 3 to face local rival Pepperdine. The Women of Troy will then pack their bags and take off to the mountains to face Colorado on April 6 and then head over to Utah on April 8.
