May 20, 2018 | Women's Golf, Features
Abdulghany posts second straight 73 to lead Trojan, Corpuz Troy's low overall.
The four-freshmen-and-a-sophomore USC women's golf starting lineup has taken the next step at the 2018 NCAA Championships, finishing the third round in fifth to make the 15-team cut and advance to the final round at Karsten Creek in Stillwater, Okla., on Sunday (May 20).
USC will begin the final round at 21-over 895 (291-298-296), 20 behind first-place Alabama, one of only two teams under par today, and nine ahead of ninth-place Florida State, playing for a top 8 finish needed to qualify for its fourth straight appearance in the NCAA eight-team match play bracket.
Following Alabama in the top 10 are UCLA (870), Arizona (880), Northwestern (882), USC, Duke (889), Stanford (890), Kent State (891), Florida State (894) and Baylor (895).
(The second wave of 12 teams are wrapping their second round as of this post).
Freshman Alyaa Abdulghany was USC's low Trojan for the second day in a row with a 1-over 73 while lone sophomore Allisen Corpuz, who had two birdies Sunday, continues to lead USC overall in a tie for 24th at 4-over 220 (72-74-74).
Freshman Jennifer Chang is tied for 30th at 5-over 221 (72-75-74), using a 1-under front 9 with three birdies en route to her 2-over round. Abdulghany, meanwhile, carded a 1-over round with two birdies against three bogeys. She birdied 6 and 12 today, giving her seven birdies and an eagle in three rounds, all on different holes.
Freshman Gabi Ruffels is tied for 52nd at 9-over 225 (74-76-75), fighting her way to a three-over round with four birdies on the challenging course. Freshman Amelia Garvey had a tough time getting on track Sunday and is now tied for 81st at 14-over 230 (73-78-79) but did finish with a birdie on 18.
The Trojans will tee off with fourth-place Northwestern and sixth-place Duke in the final round.
