No. 1 USC Unleashes 43 Goals Across Two Wins In Riverside
September 28, 2018 | Men's Water Polo, Features
Trojans top host Cal Baptist 15-6 and La Verne 28-4 in a doubleheader at the Lancer Joust.
RIVERSIDE, CALIF. — The No. 1 USC men's water polo team swamped back-to-back foes at the Lancer Joust with a one-two punch that saw the Trojans take out host No. 14 Cal Baptist 15-6 before turning right around for a 28-4 win over La Verne. After 12 Trojans got to the back of the net against the Lancers, a season-high 16 got on the scoresheet versus the Leopards in a total team effort today to help bump USC's overall record to 14-0.
In game one of the day's doubleheader, USC had to fend off host Cal Baptist early before the Trojans made a four-goal surge to take control. A 3-2 USC advantage expanded to 7-2 after Sawyer Rhodes sparked the USC offense with a goal late in the first. Goalie Nic Porter followed that with a big stop on the defensive end to close the first, and then the Trojan offense rattled off a run on strikes from Marin Dasic, Marko Vavic and Zach D'Sa. The Lancers would get one to go next, but Matt Maier would have the last word of the half for USC in finishing off a pass from Jacob Mercep to make it an 8-3 USC advantage at halftime. In the third, the USC defense was dominant, shutting out Cal Baptist while Maier and D'Sa delivered their second goals of the day around a blast from Jake Ehrhardt. Sam Slobodien finished off the 4-0 third frame to net a 12-3 USC lead entering the final stretch. There, the teams matched each other's scoring output, with Luke Wyatt notching his second goal and Troy Furniss and Orestis Apergi joining the scoresheet to wrap a 15-6 USC victory. Porter would finish up his complete-game effort in the cage with seven saves.
Minutes later, USC was right back to action in taking on La Verne for the second time this season. Sam Krutonog took over the cage for this one, while the USC offense rang up six goals from six different Trojan in just over four minutes to stake its claim on a commanding early lead over the Leopards. After USC made it 7-0 with a score from Furniss — the seventh straight Trojan to score — La Verne broke its silence, and the Trojans would grip a 7-1 lead after eight minutes of play. In the second, the Trojan poured on another eight goals for a 15-2 halftime lead that included the first goal of the season for Christian Emerson. In the next stretch, USC would continue to click off goals, with D'Sa going back-to-back and Vavic plugging in the last of the third to hold a 21-3 USC lead entering the fourth. To that point, 13 different Trojans had gotten to the back of the net. By the final buzzer, USC had a new season record with 16 Trojans on the scoresheet. Christian Hockenbury buried back-to-back goals for the Trojan cause to start the fourth, while James Kolenda and Alexander Lansill also struck their first to help USC build out a final 28-4 win. Topping out the stat sheet were three Trojans with hat tricks — D'Sa, Vavic and Luka Karaman — while goalie Krutonog finished up with eight saves in the cage.
USC will return to Riverside tomorrow for another doubleheader day. On Saturday (Sept. 29) Trojans face Concordia at 2 p.m. and Redlands at 3:30 p.m. From there, USC will head home to set up camp for a 1 p.m. bout with No. 5 UC Santa Barbara on Sunday (Sept. 30) at Uytengsu Aquatics Center.
