No. 1 USC Races To NCAA Regional First Round Lead

Ruffels 69, 70s by Chang and Abdulghany have Trojans leading by three.
Sophomore Gabriela Ruffels fired a 3-under 69 while sophomores Jennifer Chang and Alyaa Abdulghany signed for a pair of 2-under 70s as the No. 1 USC women's golf team raced to the first-round lead at the NCAA Cle Elum Regional at the Tumble Creek Club at Suncadia Resort on Monday (May 6).
USC, coming off of its sixth win of the season at the recent Pac-12 Championships, combined for a 7-under 281, three better than second-place Northwestern. Host Washington is third (-3), Arkansas is fourth (-1) and San Jose State and UCF are tied for fifth at 1-over. Three teams are tied for seventh at 5-over.
The Trojans' round was their fifth-best this season and lowest since a 279 to close the PING/ASU on March 31.
The top six teams in each of the NCAAs four regionals will advance to the national championships May 17-22 at The Blessings G.C. in Fayetteville, Ark. USC is looking to advance out of NCAA Regional play for the 22nd year in a row in its 28th consecutive NCAA appearance.
Ruffels pocketed her fifth round under 70 this year and for the second time in a row after closing the Pac-12s with a 68. Her 69 today has her tied for fifth, three out of first. She was 1-over after back-to-back bogeys on 5 and 6 today before getting back to even on 9. She finished the back 9 at -3 without a bogey.
Chang and Abdulghany are tied for eighth at 2-under. Abdulghany, in USC's leadoff spot, opened with a bogey on 1 but birdied 3 and 6 to turn at 1-under. She birdied 10 to open her back 9 and closed with eight straight pars.
Chang turned at 2-under with two birdies and mixed birdies on 13 and 14 with bogeys on 11 and 15 for an even back. It was her ninth round of par or better in her last 10 outings.
Junior Allisen Corpuz is tied for 21st at par. She turned at 2-over but used a clean back 9 with birdies on 13 and 18 to even her round. Freshman Malia Nam is tied for 26th at 1-over, mixing three birdies and four bogeys.
USC will tee off with Northwestern and Washington on Tuesday beginning at 10:20 a.m. The Trojans have won an NCAA-best 12 regional titles entering this season.
