October 20, 2023 | Women's Golf
Sophomore Catherine Park led the charge, as she is currently tied for third in the tournament after the first round
STANFORD, Calif. - USC women's golf utilized a surge in the back nine, as it sits in second place after round one at the Stanford Intercollegiate on Friday (Oct. 20) at the Stanford Golf Course in Stanford, Calif.
The Trojans were a combined three-under-par in the back nine, as sophomore Catherine Park and junior Xin (Cindy) Kou were each two-under-par during that stretch. UCLA currently leads the tournament at ten-under-par.
Park headlined the Trojans lineup, as she finished three-under-par and sits tied for fourth on the leaderboard. Park finished her round on the back nine with three birdies, to only one bogey. Kou was not that far behind at tied for seventh, as she followed an even front nine with two birdies and pars to finish the turn, as she carded a 69 overall (-2).
Following them is the two freshman, Bailey Shoemaker and Frances Kim at tied for 26th with an even score of 71. Kim is making her college debut at this tournament. Both players have already been keys to success, as the Trojans are without junior Amari Avery and senior Christine Wang, who are at the LPGA Q-School Stage II tournament. Kim rallied back in the final three holes, changing her score from two-over-par to even after a pair of birdies on No. 16 and 17.
Finishing out the group is senior Brianna Navarrosa at tied for 42nd, who overcame a double-bogey and two more bogeys, as she finished out with two birdies on No. 15 and 17 to bring her score down to a 73 (+2).
The Trojans search to hoop into the driver's seat as they head into day two at the Stanford Intercollegiate.
