April 25, 2025 | Men's Golf
TIMONIUM, Md. – USC men's golf wrapped up the first round of the Big Ten Conference Championships at eight-over par and sit tied for 14th out of 18 teams on Friday, Apr. 25 at the Baltimore Country Club.
On the first day of action, the Trojans counted scores of 70-72-73-73 (288) to combine for a team total of eight over, tying Michigan. USC's junior Antonio Safa leads his squad at even-par and is tied for 22nd in the field. No. 13 Illinois is on top of the leaderboard at 10-under par (270).
"We had a few too many expectations prior to the round and could have done a better job of adjusting to the conditions," head coach Mark Hankins said. "We need to stick to our game plan and continue to play smart, positive golf. New round and conditions for everyone tomorrow."
Safa leads USC after posting a 35 (E) on the front nine and a 35 (E) on the back nine. The junior's round was defined by a stretch of five holes – No. 3-7 – as he went bogey-eagle-birdie-bogey. His eagle on the par-five No. 4 was his fourth of the season, tying him for the team lead alongside senior Gavin Aurilia. Safa began his day on hole No. 10 and started his round with two bogeys and two pars on the back nine. Outside of that five-hole stretch on the front, Safa posted a par on the remaining holes to finalize his 70.
Sophomore Jack Jerge finished two shots behind Safa, as he was two over par and tied for 41st on the afternoon. Most of Jerge's struggles came early as he had three bogeys and no birdies on the back side of the course but was one-under par on the front side; the sophomore finished his round strong, birdieing No. 6 and 8.
Three Trojans tied for the third-best score on the squad, as freshmen Jaden Dumdumaya and Jack Buchanan, alongside Aurilia, are tied at 58th with a first-round 73 (+3). Dumdumaya's round utilized a little bit of everything, with one double bogey, five bogeys and four birdies. Buchanan's round was slightly different as he only captured one birdie and had four bogeys. Two birdies and five bogeys marked Aurilia's round on the day.
USC will be back in action as the Big Ten Conference Championships' second round begins at 6 a.m. PST/9 a.m. EST tomorrow (Saturday, Apr. 26) at the Baltimore C.C. in Timonium, Md.
