USC Women’s Rowing Wins Three Races to Start the Big Ten Invite
April 18, 2026 | Women's Rowing
Wins from the Varsity Eight, Varsity Four and Second Varsity Four highlighted the afternoon session.
SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Kicking off a weekend at the Big Ten Invitational, the USC Women's Rowing team won three races on the first day of competition at Lake Natoma in Sacramento, Calif. on Saturday, April 18.
The Trojans capped off their day by winning three of their final four races in flight three, including a thrilling, come-from-behind win from the Varsity Eight that came down to the final sprint. Earlier in the afternoon, the Varsity Four and Second Varsity Four won in back-to-back races to round out USC's wins.
After taking second in the morning session, the Trojans' Second Varsity Four took the lead early in the middle lane and didn't look back. USC increased its rate at the one-kilometer mark and eventually had an open-water victory over second-place Washington State with a time of 7:25.26.
Moments later, the Trojans' Varsity Four had a nearly identical race. The Trojans took the lead in the middle lane and fended off Washington State as the Cougars pulled within one seat of the Trojans midway through the race. Although WSU made a move with 700 meters to go, USC countered, retook the lead and grew its margin in the final 500 meters to win in 7:25.61.
In the next race, the Second Varsity Eight nearly gave USC three-straight wins. Washington State took a seven-seat lead over USC at the one-kilometer mark, yet the Trojans increased their rate and nearly caught the Cougars in the final sprint. However, WSU ended with a three-seat victory over the Trojans, who finished in second place in 6:40.83.
Yet the Trojans saved their most thrilling race for last. Michigan State bolted out to the lead early while racing out in lane one, but USC stuck with the Spartans. MSU had a four-seat lead over USC at the midway point, yet USC increased its rate to set up a close finish. Even at the final sprint, the Trojans made a decisive move in the last 250 meters to win in 6:27.45, edging out the Spartans by just over one second.
All five boats had top-two finishes in the afternoon session, as the Third Varsity Eight took second to Ohio State in 7:01.84 in flight three. In the morning session, the Trojans had one second-place finish, three third-place finishes and a fourth-place finish.
