THIS YEAR: Senior Dominic Smallwood begins his final season competing in the triple and long jumps for the Trojans.
2017: Set both his long jump and triple jump PRs during the season. Placed second in the triple jump with a wind-aided PR of 51-8.50/15.76m (+2.8w) at the Pac-12 Championships on May 14...had taken the lead with his final attempt, but teammate Eric Sloan won on the final jump of the day. Smallwood also finished fourth in the long jump with a leap of 24-5.50/7.45 (+1.3) at Pac-12s on May 13. He placed 17th in the long jump at 25-0.50/7.63m (+2.2w) at the NCAA West Prelims on May 25. He set has triple jump PR of 51-6.50/15.71m (+1.5) to placed 14th at the NCAA West Prelims. He set his long jump PR with a jump of 25-2.75/7.69m (+0.0) to take second at the Trojan Invitational on March 18.
2016: Had a then wind-legal PR of 50-1.25/15.27m (+1.2) to win the triple jump at the Cardinal & Gold Challenge on March 26. Posted a wind-aided best TJ of 50-8.25/15.45m (+4.8w) to finish third at the Mt. SAC Relays on April 15. Finished third in the Dual Meet (49-6.25) and 11th at the Pac-12 Championships (47-5.00) in the triple jump. Set a then long jump PR of 24-7.25/7.50m (+1.2) to finish 13th at the NCAA West Preliminary Rounds, one spot out of advancing to nationals in the event. Placed third in the LJ at the Pac-12 Championships with a jump of 24-4.50/7.43 (-1.2). Withdrew from the triple jump with a hamstring injury at the NCAA West Preliminary Rounds.
2015: Smallwood had a season-best triple jump of 49-7.25/15.12m (+1.6m) in placing second at the USC-UCLA Dual Meet on May 3. He finished 12th in the triple jump with a mark of 49-9.75 at the Pac-12 Championships and went on to place 45th at the West Regional with a best jump of 47-2.25. He also competed in the long jump with a best wind-aided leap of 23-5.25/7.14m (+2.1w) earning him 10th at the Pac-12 Championships. His best wind-legal long jump of the season was 23-3.50/7.10m (+0.4) to take second at the Ben Brown Invtational on March 14. He opened his season with a long jump win (23-2.00) at the Rossi Relays on Feb. 28. Competed in the high jump at the Dual Meet and placed sixth with a clearance of 6-2.75 (1.90m).
HIGH SCHOOL: Smallwood is a 2014 graduate from Silverado High in Las Vegas, Nev. He was named the 2013-14 Gatorade Nevada Boys Track & Field Athlete of the Year. He is a two-time state triple jump champion. He won the 2014 Nevada state title in the triple jump (48-1.50) and long jump (24-1.25w). In 2013 he won the state triple jump title with a leap of 49-2.00. He led his team to an eighth-place finish in the state in 2014. Smallwood broke the Nevada Southern Zone record with a wind-legal triple jump of 50-1.00 in 2014, which ranked fifth in the nation among high school seniors. He placed seventh in 2013 at the USATF Junior Championships with a triple jump of 47-8.50. He also excelled in the classroom where he maintained a weighted 4.54 GPA.
PERSONAL: Dominic was born on Dec. 28, 1995 in San Diego, Calif...His parents are Dimitrius and Leslie Smallwood and he has three siblings, Jessica, Dimitrius Jr. and Adrian...He is an Economics major at USC and would like to go into the Aerospace field...He spoke at the Sun Youth Forum, a student empowerment program and has volunteered as a local youth track coach...Lists his favorite movie as Scarface and his favorite musical artist as Dmitri Shostakovich...His favorite food is spaghetti...Some day would like to travel to Australia.
