Bio
THIS YEAR: Sophomore Michael Norman begins his second season as a sprinter at USC. He set the USC freshman record and ranks third on the Trojans' all-time 400m list.
2017: Norman was slowed by a hamstring issue and didn't open up his outdoor campaign until the USC-UCLA Dual Meet on April 30. He made his outdoor collegiate debut special by winning the 400m race with a then USC freshman record time of 45.22, but he was just getting started and would break that record four more times. He won the Pac-12 400m title with a then-PR of 45.15, edging out Marcus Chambers of Oregon, the two-time defending champion in the event. He also anchored USC's title-winning 4x400m relay which posted a time of 3:07.67. He cruised out of the NCAA West Prelims with the fifth-fastest qualifying time of 45.38. He also anchored USC's 4x400m relay which ran 3:04.65, USC's fastest time since 2012, to advance to the NCAA Championships. He had a then-personal best in the 400m of 44.97 in the NCAA semifinals and finished fourth in the final with a new best of 44.88 to earn All-America honors. He anchored USC's 4x400m relay which finished 13th with a time of 3:05.80. Norman reached the USA T&F Championship finals by taking third in the semifinals on June 23 with a USC freshman record of 44.60, which ranks third on USC's all-time list. He finished seventh in the finals with a time of 44.80 on June 24. He also ran in two indoor 200m races, winning his collegiate indoor debut with a time of 20.76 at the New Mexico Classic on Feb. 3 and taking fourth with a USC freshman record and fourth-fastest time ever by a Trojan of 20.75 at the Tyson Invitational on Feb. 11.
HIGH SCHOOL: Norman graduated from Vista Murrieta in 2016 and led his team to the California state title his junior and senior seasons. He was named the 2016 National Gatorade Track Athlete of the Year. He has bests of 10.27 in the 100m, 20.14 in the 200m and 45.19 in the 400m. Norman placed fifth at the Olympic Trials and first at the Junior Outdoor Championships for the 200m in 2016. He also finished first in the World Junior Championships for the 200m and 4x100m relay. His time of 20.14 in the 200m ranks third all-time by a high schooler and his 45.19 time in the 400m ranks seventh all-time by a prep runner...he is the only high school runner ever to have posted a top 10 mark in both events.
PERSONAL: Michael was born on Dec. 3 1997 in San Diego, Calif....Parents are Michael and Nobue Norman and he has one sister, Michelle...Sports hero is Trayvon Bromell...Lists favorite food as chicken...One day would like to travel to Caribbean...Enjoys playing basketball in his free time…Favorite musical artists are Tory Lanez, Meek Mill, Lil Uzi, and Kanye West…Hopes to run professionally and become a sports broadcaster...He is a Communication major at USC.
