Bio
THIS YEAR: Junior All-American Rai Benjamin is in his first season as a hurdler and sprinter for USC. He transferred to USC from UCLA with two seasons of eligibility remaining, beginning this season.
2017: He took second and earned All-America honors in the 400m hurdles with a PR of 48.33 at the NCAA Championships on June 9, just .01 behind the winner. His time matches the USC school record set in 2000 by two-time Olympic gold medalist Felix Sanchez. Benjamin won the Pac-12 400m hurdles title with a time of 49.52 on May 14.   He also won the Dual Meet 400m hurdles title with a time of 54.58 and took second in the 400m with a time of 45.72 on April 30.
2016: Placed sixth at the NCAA Championships with a then-PR of 49.82 to earn All-America honors. Only competed in four hurdles races during the season. Ran his first 400m hurdles race at the Pac-12 Championships where he ran 52.21 in the prelims to finish fourth, but did not run in the finals. He took third at the NCAA West Preliminary Rounds with a time of 50.88. He also ran on both the 4x100m and 4x400m relays for the Bruins. Had a best indoor times of 21.17 in the 200m and 47.57 in the 400m.
HIGH SCHOOL: Attended Mount Vernon High School in Mount Vernon, New York. Clocked the fastest prep time in the country in the 400m hurdles with a time of 49.97… also posted the fasted 400m indoor time in the country of 46.59 and the third-fastest outdoor time of 46.19. Won the New York Indoor State meet with a national-leading time of 33.17 in the 300m. He was a three-time state champion in the 400m hurdles. He was the 2015 New Balance indoor 400m champion and the 2015 New Balance outdoor champion in the 400m hurdles. As a junior, he was named the 2014 Journal News Westchester/Putnam Boys Outdoor T&F Athlete of the Year. Won the New York State Meet in the 400m hurdles with a time of 51.86. Posted a 37.61 in his only 300m hurdle race of the season, taking third at the Arcadia Invitational. Won the New York State Indoor 300m title with a meet, Section 1, county and school record time of 33.84. Also, won the New York State outdoor title in the 400m in 2013 with a time of 53.13. Holds personal bests of 46.19 (NJR, Antigua) in the 400m, 49.97 (NR, Antigua) in the 400m hurdles, 20.88 in the 200m and 10.66 in the 100m.
PERSONAL: Rai was born on July 27, 1997....he is the son of Winston Benjamin and Jeanette Mason. He is a Political Science major at USC. Â
