LOS ANGELES -- The Women of Troy had a dominating performance on Sunday, Jan. 14 at Marks Stadium as they were victorious over the San Diego Toreros in a 6-1 win.
The morning opened with doubles where the Women of Troy surged to a quick lead on the first two courts. Court two was the first to finish as USC's Smith/Weissmann defeated USD's Torres/Chow 6-1. Minutes later, court one with No. 46 Valdes/Kulikov reached the finish line defeating the Toreros pair of Anderson/Morales 6-1. The battle on court three was neck in neck, but concluded its match with Trojans Westby/Branstine beating San Diego's Garcia/Nonnenmacher 6-4. By going undefeated in doubles, the Women of Troy were able to secure the first point of the day and enter singles with a 1-0 advantage.
Singles took off in a flash, and the Women of Troy began to run through their respective matches. USC's No. 35 Gabby Smith concluded her match with a decisive 6-2, 6- 0 win over USD's Nicole Anderson. Constance Branstine was the next Trojan to claim a victory as she defeated Sophia Chow 6-3, 6-2. After a tough battle, USC's Becca Weissmann beat Torero Daniela Morales 7-6 (6), 6-3 to clinch the match for the Women of Troy.
Although the Trojans had already won the match, the rest of the courts were played out. USC's No. 85 Madison Westby had a hard-fought victory over USD's Gemma Garcia 3-6, 6-1, 6-1 on court three. Moments later, Angela Kulikov defeated her Torero opponent Maria-Paula Torres 5-7, 6-2, 6-1. Finally, USC's Sydney Van Alphen fought hard but fell to San Diego's Carolin Nonnenmacher 4-6, 6-4, 10-6.
Head coach Alison Swain spoke on the team's performance at today's match, "I thought today was a great opening match for our program. I was really proud of how much we fought and stayed focus throughout the whole match, regardless of the score. Most importantly we competed as a team today, which was our goal."
USC's next action will bring them back to Marks Stadium where they will take on Loyola Marymount. LMU boasts an impressive season last year ending with their most wins since 2002. The Trojans last meeting with LMU resulted in a 4-3 victory in March of 2017. The Women of Troy will face the Lions on Friday, Jan. 19 at 1:30 p.m.
