Women of Troy Take Down Loyola Marymount 5-2
January 19, 2018 | Women's Tennis, Features
The USC women's tennis team defeated Loyola Marymount 5-2 today (Jan. 19) at Marks Tennis Stadium to extend their winning streak over the Lions to 16-0. The Women of Troy are now 2-0 on the season.
"I was really proud of the girls today in their tough match against LMU," said head coach Alison Swain. "We came out with a lot of energy in doubles, and I think we did a great job closing things out to clinch the doubles point. We really pushed ahead with some strong finishes in singles to get four wins in a row."
Trojan tandem Madison Westby and Constance Branstine turned up the heat as they swiftly defeated LMU's Camila Tumosa/Yesica De Lucas 6-0 on court three. USC's No. 46 pair of Angela Kulikov/Rianna Valdes was locked in a tight battle with No. 10 Veronica Miroshnichenko/Eva Marie Voracek. After exchanging games back and forth, the Trojans made a strong push to earn an impressive victory over the nationally ranked No. 10 team in the country 6-4. USC entered the singles portion of the competition with a 1-0 lead.
Trojan sophomore Angela Kulikov scored the first singles point of the afternoon as she took down LMU's Camila Tumosa 6-2, 6-0 on court five. The attention in Marks Stadium switched over to court three where USC junior Rianna Valdes was competing against LMU's Siobhan Anderson. After a strong first set win with a 6-1 score in Valdes' favor, the second set was a closer battle. Valdes held a small 4-3 lead, but rattled off two straight games to claim the set 6-3 for the victory. The Trojans led 3-0, just one win away from clinching the match.
The deciding point would come from court two as sophomore Becca Weissmann clinched her second match in a row as a Trojan. After winning her first set over No. 107 Eva Marie Voracek 6-1, the transfer from LSU exchanged games back and forth with her Lion opponent. As the second set was tied at 5-5, Weissmann took the following game to push ahead 6-5 and then swung away for four-straight points to claim her set 7-5 and clinch the overall match for Troy.
With the overall match decided in USC's favor, there were still three individual matches underway that needed to be played out. Trojan senior captain Madison Westby attacked her singles match with a winning mindset as she took the first set against Lion opponent Anna Romeka 6-1. After losing the second set 6-3 to Romeka, Westby battled back in true Trojan form to claim the third set 6-4 and win her match.
On court six, USC freshman Sydney Van Alphen won her first set 6-4, but unfortunately dropped the next two sets to LMU's Yesica De Lucas 6-1, 7-6 (2). The final match of the day was a nail biter. Senior Trojan captain No. 35 Gabby Smith lost her first set 6-4 to LMU's No. 29 Veronica Miroshnichenko. Smith clawed back from a 4-5 deficit in the second set to win a 7-5 battle and force a 10-point tiebreaker to decide the match. After a 6-2 lead, Miroshnichenko tied up the break at 8-8. The breaker was forced into extra points where Miroshnichenko came out on top 13-11 to win the match.
The Trojans return to Marks Stadium tomorrow (Jan. 20) to take on UC Santa Barbara at 10 a.m.
