November 07, 2018 | Women's Golf, Features
Trojans finish first part of schedule with three wins, five top 3 finishes.
Sophomores Jennifer Chang and Gabriela Ruffels were both under par to pace the No. 1 USC women's golf team in the final round of the Pac-12 Preview at the Nanea G.C. in Kailua Kona, Hawaii, on Wednesday (Nov. 7), but the Trojans fell a few strokes short of winning their fourth straight tournament.
The Trojans, a three-time winner this fall, started the morning four strokes back and fell in an even deeper hole midway through the day before rallying for a 1-under round to finish the tournament tied for third at par 876 (289-296-291).
"We're disappointed that we weren't able to complete the comeback today, but we finish the fall season very pleased with the progress we've made," USC Head Coach Justin Silverstein said. "Three wins and two third-place finishes -- with this incredible strength of schedule -- is a great start to the year and we look to build on that when we get back into action in February."
Ruffels was USC's top finisher, tying for eighth at 2-under 217 (69-76-72) on the par 73 course, posting four birdies in her final round. It is her third top 10 result of the fall.
Freshman Malia Nam (72-73-74) and sophomore Amelia Garvey (71-74-74) tied for 12th at par 219. Nam birdied two holes in her final round, including on 5, her final hole of the day, securing her fifth top 12 to start her collegiate career. Garvey had four birdies to help register her third straight top 15 this fall.
Chang's streak of 11 straight top 15 finishes came to an end today despite her 2-under round, the sophomore tying for 28th at 5-over 224 (77-76-71). Sophomore Alyaa Abdulghany tied for 41st at 9-over 228 (78-73-77).
The Trojans now take a competitive break until the spring semester, when they resume competition at the Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge, Feb. 3-5, at the Palos Verdes G.C.
