No. 1 USC Rally Falls Just Short, Trojans Take Second At Silverado Showdown

Garvey fires collegiate best 67 to lead Troy in final round.
Sophomore Amelia Garvey fired a collegiate career-best 67 while freshman Malia Nam carded a 2-under 70 to lead a final-round charge that fell just short as the short-handed No. 1 USC women's golf team finished second at the Silverado Showdown at the Silverado Resort and Spa on Tuesday (April 9).
The Trojans posted their 10th top 3 finish in as many regular season starts, taking second at 10-over 874 (291-297-286), four back of Northwestern and seven ahead of third-place Stanford.
USC, with five wins this season, began the day 12 back of the Wildcats but closed the gap quickly and spent much of the final round within five strokes before settling for second.
USC played the tournament without oft-used starters junior Allisen Corpuz and sophomores Alyaa Abdulghany and Jennifer Chang after the trio competed in last week's Augusta National Women's Amateur.
Nam tied for second at par 216 (71-75-70), finishing just one stroke out of first while posting her fourth top 7 finish of the season. She was 1-over on the front but finished the back at 3-under, tying her season-best finish.
Ruffels tied for seventh at 3-over 219 (72-72-75), notching her fourth top eight of the year. She had three birdies in her final round.
Garvey's previous USC best rounds were three 69s this season but she bested it today en route to tying for 11th at 5-over 211 (78-76-67). Starting on hole 3, she began with five birdies over her first seven holes. She went bogey-birdie-bogey to start the back 9 but a birdie on 1 got her back to 5-under for the day, enabling her to collect her seventh top 15 this season.
Junior Aiko Leong tied for 34th at 10-over 226 (71-81-72) with freshman Katherine Muzi (77-74-75), both of whom had two birdies today.
USC is off until Monday, when it hosts the three-day Pac-12 Championships at Palos Verdes G.C.
