No. 1 USC Completes NCAA Second Round, Still In Second
May 19, 2019 | Women's Golf, Features
The Trojans will now wait for Monday's final round.
USC's No. 1 women's golf team played its handful of remaining second-round holes Sunday morning to complete its play from the weather-shortened action on Saturday and now sits in second place at the NCAA Championships in Fayetteville, Arkansas.
The Trojans wrapped the second round at 3-under and are currently second at 11-over 595 (306-289), nine back of Duke and one ahead of Texas. Defending champion Arizona is fourth, two behind USC.
Weather warnings in the area forced a lengthy delay and eventual suspension of play Saturday that kept early starting teams like USC from finishing their rounds and prevented the second wave of teams from starting. The second wave is starting its round today.
Tournament officials ultimately were forced to shorten the championships to 54 holes. USC will join the rest of the 24-team field Monday for the final round and need a top-8 finish to advance to Tuesday's match play bracket.
Sophomore Alyaa Abdulghany posted a 6 on the par 4 18th hole to finish her second round at 4-over 77 while sophomore Amelia Garvey doubled 17 and was par on 18 to finish her round even. She went out yesterday at 6-under, helping offset struggles on the back nine.
Individual standings will change after the remaining 12 teams finish today. As of now, Garvey is tied for sixth at 1-over 147 (74-73), four back, while sophomore Malia Nam is tied for 17th at 3-over 149 (77-72).
Sophomore Gabriela Ruffels is tied for 30th at 5-over 151 (81-70), sophomore Jennifer Chang is tied for 38th at 152 6-over (78-74) and Abdulghany is tied for 66th at 8-over 154 (77-77).
