No. 1 USC Set For NCAA Match Play Championships

Amelia Garvey completes USC's best individual finish since 2014.
Amelia Garvey, with her par on 18, officially completed USC's third round at the 2019 NCAA Championships by locking in a tie for seventh, the Trojans taking third at 17-over 893 (306-289-298), setting up a match-play assignment against defending NCAA champion Arizona.

The Wildcats finished sixth at 28-over 904 (304-294-306). Texas took first at 7-over 883 followed by Duke (14-over 890), USC, host Arkansas (24-over 900), Wake Forest (26-over 902), Arizona, Stanford (30-over 906) and Auburn (39-over 915).

Only USC and Stanford have advanced to the NCAA match play in all five years since its inception at the women's championships. The Trojans, three-time NCAA champions, are looking to get past the semifinals for the first time.

Duke will face Stanford in the Nos. 2-7 matchup and will begin at 6 a.m. CT along with USC and Arizona. No. 1 seed Texas will face No. 8 seed Auburn and No. 4 seed Arkansas will take on No. 5 seed Wake Forest following the earlier matches.

USC is 3-4 in the NCAA match play format since it started. It beat Washington in the quarterfinals in 2015 before falling to eventual champion Stanford. In 2016, USC fell to Duke in the quarterfinals. In 2017, USC defeated Ohio State in the quarters before losing to Northwestern in the semifinals, 3-2. In 2018, USC beat Duke, 3-1-1, and then lost to Alabama by the same score.

Garvey wrapped her 54 holes at 2-over 221 (74-73-74). She posted USC's best finish since Doris Chen (2014) and Annie Park (2013) won back-to-back NCAA titles.

With all scores accounted for, sophomore Gabriela Ruffels tied for 19th at 6-over 225 (81-70-74). Sophomore Alyaa Abdulghany (77-77-73) and freshman Malia Nam (77-72-78) tied for 29th at 8-over 227. Sophomore Jennifer Chang tied for 36th at 10-over 229 (78-74-77).
