The USC Track & Field team will be competing this week at the Stanford Invitational in Palo Alto, Calif. on April 1-2 and at the CSUN Invitational in Northridge, Calif. on April 1-2.
TEXAS RELAYS RECAP -- Celera Barnes won the women's 100m with the first-fastest NCAA any conditions time ever of 10.82 (+2.8w). Jalaysiya Smith won the women's University/College 100m hurdles with a time of 13.50 (+1.5) and Maci Simmons won the women's U/C 400m hurdles with a time of 60.23. Jalyn Jackson was second in the long jump with a best leap of 24-8.50/7.53m (+0.8) and Brendon Sewart placed second in the men's 100m dash University/College with a time of 10.29 (+2.8w). Trey Knight had a throw of 228-2 (69.54m) to place second in the men's hammer throw, first among collegians. Also, USC's 4x400m relay team of Janiah Brown, Gigi Maccagnini, Jemima Russell and Alyssa Brewer placed third with a school-record time of 8.38.89.
RETURNING ALL-AMERICANS -- USC has eight returning outdoor All-Americans who scored at the 2021 NCAA Championships. Women: The USC xxxx Jasmine Jones (4x100m), Bailey Lear (400m, 4x400m), Temi Ojora (TJ), Kaelin Roberts (4x400m). Men: Davonte Burnett (100m, 200m), Tade Ojora (110m H), Nicholas Ramey (4x400m), Earnest Sears III (HJ).
BARNES EARNS PAC-12 W-TRACK ATHLETE OF THE WEEK HONORS -- USC sprinter Celera Barnes was named the Pac-12 Women's Track Athlete of the Week for the week of March 21-27 in was announced by the Conference today (March 29). Barnes, a graduate transfer from Kentucky, won the women's 100m dash at the Texas Relays on March 26 with a wind-aided time of 10.82 (+2.8w). That is the fifth-fastest any condition women's collegiate 100m dash of all-time. A day earlier, Barnes had the fastest qualifying time to the finals of 11.07 (+1.2), which is her wind-legal PR and ranks fourth on USC's all-time list. Barnes currently has the fastest wind-legal and wind-aided 100m dash times in the world this season.
TOP 25 TROJANS - The Trojans have 20 athletes and three relays which rank in the top 25 among performances during the early 2022 outdoor season. They are:
Women: Celera Barnes (1st - 100m), Janiah Brown (14th - 800m), Karlee Freeman (10th - DT), Jasmine Jones (4th - 100m H), Bailey Lear (6th - 400m), Joy McArthur (14th - HT), Samirah Moody (3rd - 100m, 14th - 200m), Jalaysiya Smith (18th - 100m H) and 4x100m (10th)
Men: Johnnie Blockberger (10th - 200m), Jalyn Jackson (25th - LJ, 9th - TJ), Christian Johnson (24th - HT), Trey Knight (2nd - HT), Tade Ojora (4th - 110m H), Nikolas Polychroniou (23rd - HT), Nicholas Ramey (20th - 400m), Earnest Sears III (2nd - HJ), Zach Shinnick (7th - 200m), Brendon Stewart (T-24th - 10m), Sam VanDorpe (17th - 800m), Dallas Wise (T-25th - HJ), 4x100m (9th) and 4x400m (12th).50-YEAR/25-YEAR REUNIONS -- As always, the 50-year and 25-year anniversary USC teams will be honored at the USC-UCLA Dual Meet, this year hosted by the Trojans on May 1. This year three teams from each category will be honored due to the alternating site of the meet and due to the cancellation of the 2020 meet due to COVID-19. The 50-year teams to be honored this year will be the the 1971-1972-1973 teams and for the 25-year teams being honored are the 1995-1996-1997 teams.
DAN LANGE, THE ALL-AMERICAN COACH -- Dan Lange is in his 33rd season as USC throws coach and is one of the nation's most respected teachers, having guided his athletes to All-American honors 70 times. He also has coached Trojan throwers to 13 school records and 29 individual Pac-12 titles. If you want to measure his impact on the Trojan throws program, you have to go no farther than the USC top 10 lists as all but one of the top 10 male and female hammer throwers in school history have been coached by Lange and all but one of the USC record-holders in the men's and women's hammer, discus, javelin and shot put have been coached by Lange. For 21 consecutive seasons (1993-2013) he guided at least one Trojan hammer thrower to All-America honors and he has coached at least one Trojan thrower to All-America honors in 31 of his first 32 seasons.
