USC’s Catherine Park Tied for Second After Round One of NCAA Championships

CARLSBAD, Calif. – Junior Catherine Park placed tied for second in the field after collecting a round one, 68 (-4). USC as a squad is 10th out of 30 teams at four-over par after round one of the NCAA Championships on Friday, May 16, at the Omni La Costa Resort & Spa.
The Trojans as a squad counted 68-73-73-78 (292), as they are currently two strokes ahead of the first initial cut (top 15 on Sunday) and are one stroke back of the top eight. No. 24 Vanderbilt leads the tournament at six under par.
Park led the squad in the first round as she went two-under par on both sides of the course, respectively. The junior went bogey-free on the back nine with two birdies, then earned four birdies and two bogeys on the front side of the course.
After posting her ninth round in the 60s this season, Park is tied for the second most rounds in the 60s for a career (22), tied with Sophia Popov (2011-14). This is her second straight season with nine rounds in the 60s. The junior also tied her own program record for par or better rounds, as she currently sits at 23 for the season.
Tying for second on the team were freshmen Jasmine Koo and Kylie Chong, who were one-over par, placing them 46th on the leaderboard. Koo started her round with a 37 (+1) on the back nine, before rounding it out with a 36 (E) on the front nine. Chong did the opposite with an even-par front nine and one-over-par back nine.
Sophomore Bailey Shoemaker rounded out the counting scores in the first round. Shoemaker went six-over par, with seven bogeys and one birdie. Her 78 (+6) puts her tied for 123rd in the field.
Senior Xin (Cindy) Kou was the final score of the lineup as she was seven-over par and is tied for 137th.
The Trojans return to the course for the NCAA Championships second round starting tomorrow at 7:25 a.m. in Carlsbad, Calif., at the Omni La Costa Resort & Spa.
