No. 1 USC Too Strong For San José State On Senior Day
October 28, 2017 | Men's Water Polo, Features
Every one of USC’s 13 seniors had a hand in today’s 24-8 win over the Spartans.
LOS ANGELES, CALIF. — The No. 1 USC men's water polo team let its depth shine through in a resounding 24-8 win over visiting No. 11 San José State. After a Senior Day ceremony to honor the Trojans' 13-man senior class, every single senior had a hand in stoking USC to victory at Uytengsu Aquatics Center. The win improves the Trojans to 21-1 overall on the year.
In a display of USC's depth, two seniors, one sophomore and one freshman registered hat tricks in the win, while 12 other Trojans — including eight more seniors — got on the scoresheet today. Senior goalie McQuin Baron, meanwhile, hauled in seven saves in three periods of work while helping the USC defense shut out the Spartans in the third period of play. He'd give way to redshirt sophomore Simon Wu for the fourth period as USC rounded out the 24-8 win with goals coming from four new Trojan scorers.
USC peeled out to a 7-0 lead in the game as senior Grant Stein, freshman Marko Vavic and sophomore Marin Dasic each struck twice in the rally to make two steps toward their eventual hat tricks on the day. In fact, each Trojan who scored in that opening surge would wind up with three-goal games, as senior captain James Walters plugged in the opener en route to a hat trick he'd finish off by the third period.
San José State broke its silence with back-to-back goals from the prolific Jacob Mercep by the end of the first, but USC got back to it out of the gates in the second. Vavic had his hat trick in the books early in hammering home the first goal of the second period, and Matt Maier and senior Matteo Morelli went back-to-back for the Trojan cause soon after to follow up another Spartan goal, making it 10-3 Trojans. A SJSU 6-on-5 would go as planned for the Spartans, but USC scored two to answer, with Walters delivering his second and Lazar Pasuljevic joining the senior class scoring trend with a laser that made it 12-4 Trojans for halftime.
To start the second half, USC's senior class truly stepped up. Murphy Slater let loose a ripper to make it 13-4, and Tim Leong rifled one in next to make it 14-4. Less than a minute later, redshirt senior Mitch Embrey delivered a blast out of set, and USC's Senior Day was in serious effect. Every goal in the third period came from a USC senior, with Walters and Stein each finishing off their hat tricks before Mihajlo Milicevic delivered a field block that sent USC back on the attack. There, Morelli found fellow senior Lachlan Edwards for a shove at the post and an 18-4 lead. Senior goalie Baron made the save against an SJSU power play next, and then senior Blake Edwards tucked the ball into the top corner to make it 19-4 Trojans in the final minute of the third. USC and the Spartans would go goal-for-goal in the fourth, but it was another USC senior who had the last word on the offensive end for the Trojans. Brock Hudnut would tack up the final USC goal as he finished off a USC power play, taking a pass from Walters and then burying it to wrap up a 24-8 win for the Trojans in home waters.
USC will play out the rest of the regular season with a series of road games. Next week, the Trojans will visit Cal for a key MPSF clash at 11 a.m. on Saturday (Nov. 4) in Berkeley. The next day, USC takes on Pacific in a 1 p.m. matchup in Stockton on Sunday (Nov. 5).
