May 18, 2019 | Women's Golf, Features
Gabriela Ruffels leads Trojans with 3-under round.
Sophomore Gabriela Ruffels rebounded from a tough first round with a 3-under second round while freshman Malia Nam fired 1-under 72 to lead No. 1 USC into second place during a weather-shortened second round today at the 2019 NCAA Championships in Fayetteville, Arkansas, at the Blessings G.C.
The Trojans, off in the early wave, were three holes short of finishing their round when play was suspended due to severe weather in the area.
The entire second wave was unable to start the second round and will complete it tomorrow (May 19) after the first wave finishes. USC will finish its round tomorrow beginning at 8 a.m. PT.
The tournament has been shortened to 54 holes due to the weather delays. All 24 teams will play in Monday's final round. Match play is still scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday.
USC was 5-under on the day and 9-over overall and sitting second behind Duke when the Trojans hit their last ball. USC will need to be in the top 8 after Monday to advance to Tuesday's match play.
In addition to Ruffels and Nam, sophomore Jennifer Chang carded a 1-over 74 before play stopped.
Sophomore Alyaa Abdulghany finished 17 with a birdie to move to +2 for the day while sophomore Amelia Garvey was 2-under thru 16.
Garvey had the championships buzzing early in the morning with a dominant front 9 that saw her birdie six holes en route to a 6-under front. She came back to earth on the back but is still 1-under overall and tied for third.
Ruffels, who was 8-over Friday, posted six birdies Saturday. She turned at 2-under and closed at 1-under and is now inside the top 40.
Nam is 3-over and tied for 22nd while Chang and Abdulghany are 6-over and tied for 45th.
