CAREER: Throughout his four-year career at Michigan State (2022-24), VanSumeren recorded 71 tackles, including 4.5 for loss of 14 yards (with 3 sacks for minus 12 yards) and 1 PBU while appearing in 28 games with 24 starts.
MICHIGAN STATE: As a redshirt junior in 2025, he recorded 52 tackles, including 2 for loss of 10 yards (with 1.5 sacks for minus 10 yards), 2 QB hurries and 1 PBU.
As a redshirt sophomore in 2024, he collected 16 tackles, including 2.5 for loss of 4 yards (with 1.5 sacks for minus 2 yards).
VanSumeren missed the entire 2023 season due to injury.
As a true freshman in 2022, he had 3 tackles.
HIGH SCHOOL: VanSumeren, a four-star recruit, was ranked as the No. 202 player in the nation by Rivals, No. 216 by ESPN and No. 217 by 247Sports. He as rated as the No. 3 player in the state of Michigan by ESPN, No. 4 by Rivals and 247Sports and No. 11 by On3. He was touted as the No. 14 defensive lineman in the country by Rivals, No. 19 by ESPN, No. 29 by 247Sports and No. 45 by On3.
As a senior in 2021, he recorded 48 tackles, including 11 for loss (with 6 sacks) and 28 QB hurries. He also played H-back on offense. He was a 2021 Detroit News Dream Team selection and earned placement on the 2021 Detroit Free Press All-State First Team and the 2021 Associated Press All-State First Team.
As a junior in 2020, he tallied 63 tackles, including 19 for loss, 32 QB hurries and 3 forced fumbles.
PERSONAL: He earned his bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice in the fall of 2025 from Michigan State. He is currently pursuing a graduate certificate in Gerontology at USC. His brother, Ben, played football Michigan State and went on to play in the NFL for the Philadelphia Eagles. He earned placement on the 2023 Big Ten Fall All-Academic Team and the 2024 Big Ten Fall All-Academic Team.
