2021: Matthews will serve as a backup outside linebacker and play on special teams as a walk-on junior in 2021.
2020: Matthews saw action in all 6 games as a reserve outside linebacker and on special teams as a walk-on sophomore in 2020. Overall in 2020, he had 1 tackle (against Oregon).
2019: Matthews, a backup outside linebacker, was sidelined in 2019 as a walk-on sophomore with a back injury suffered in fall camp. After the season, he was granted a sixth year of eligibility by the NCAA for medical reasons.
2018: Matthews did not see action as a backup inside linebacker as a redshirt freshman walk-on in 2018. He won USC’s Service Team Co-Defensive Player of the Year Award.
2017: Matthews redshirted as a reserve outside linebacker as a walk-on first-year freshman in 2017.
HIGH SCHOOL: He had 26 tackles for loss with 6 sacks as a 2016 senior defensive end and tight end at Bishop Montgomery High in Torrance (Calif.).
As a junior in 2015, he made All-CIF Northwest Division and All-South Catholic League Defensive Player of the Year while getting 11 sacks.
He also played basketball at Bishop Montgomery.
PERSONAL: He is a social sciences (economics) major at USC.
