He redshirted his 2019 freshman season as a quarterback at Oklahoma State. He graduated a semester early from high school and enrolled there in the spring of 2019. He attended Saddleback Junior College in Mission Viejo (Calif.) in the fall of 2020, but did not play football there.
He was a 2-time (2017-18) All-South Coast League first teamer as a quarterback at San Clemente (Calif.) High, earning league MVP and National Football Foundation Scholar Athlete honors as a 2018 senior. He completed 167-of-264 passes (63.3%) for 2,328 yards with 22 touchdowns and 5 interceptions as a senior and rushed for 658 yards on 108 carries (6.1 avg) with 9 TDs.
As a 2017 junior, he hit 168-of-262 passes (64.1%) for 2,132 yards with 23 TDs and 2 interceptions and rushed for 392 yards on 99 carries (4.0 avg) with 5 TDs.
He was 18-of-37 passing (48.6%) for 198 yards with 2 TDs and ran for 115 yards on 20 carries (5.8 avg) with a TD as a 2016 sophomore.
He also was on the basketball and track teams at San Clemente.
His father, Brian, played football at Lehigh, his mother, Kim, was a diver at Massachusetts, his uncle, Michael Costello, played basketball at Boston University (1997-2000) and his grandfather, Paul Costello, played basketball at St. Anselm’s College (1970-73).
