THIS YEAR: Senior Leif (LAYF) Nelson is in his first season as a thrower on the USC track and field team. He comes to USC after three seasons of competing for Minot State.
BEFORE USC: Nelson competed for Minot State from 2021-23 where he was a two-time Division II All-American in the javelin throw. He was also a two-time Academic All-American. He placed fifth in the javelin throw with a mark of 234-8 (71.52m) at the 2023 NCAA Division II Championships on May 27. He is the Minot State javelin throw record holder with a PR of 237-2 (72.28m). He also has a shot put best of 51-1.25 (15.88m) and 153-7 (46.81m) in the discus throw. Nelson also placed 12th in the javelin throw at the 2022 NCAA Division II Championships with a throw of 207-11 (63.37m). Nelson attended Lake Region State College for the 2019-20 season to play basketball and averaged 9.8 points a game while shooting 46.6 percent from the field.
HIGH SCHOOL: Nelson is a 2019 graduate of Devil’s Lake High in Devil’s Lake, N.D. He competed in basketball and track and field in high school.
PERSONAL: Nelson was born on July 2, 2000…His parents are Meg and Nels Nelson and he has eight siblings, Julie, Justin, Jessica, Jared, Erin, Grant, Erica and Joel….His outside interests include basketball and Netflix…Has been involved with the CRU organization…His favorite movie is Spider-Man…His favorite food is pizza…Would like to travel to Jerusalem…Is working on a degree in Entrepreneurship and a Master’s in Gerontology.
