THIS YEAR: Graduate student Sara Zabarino is in her first season as a thrower on the USC track and field team. She previously competed in track and field at Florida State and graduated Magna Cum Laude in 2023 with a degree in Food and Nutrition Science.
BEFORE USC: Zabarino attended Florida State from 2020-23. Zabarino set her collegiate javelin throw personal best and FSU school record of 182-7 (55.66m) while placing second in the event at the 2022 ACC Outdoor Championships on May 12. She earned All-America honors in the javelin throw by placing fifth at the 2022 NCAA Championships with a throw of 182-5 (55.61m). She won the javelin throw with a mark of 179-3 (54.65m) at the 2022 Crimson Tide Invitational. In 2021, she also placed second in the javelin throw at the ACC Championships and earned second-team All-America honors by placing 10th at the NCAA Championships. Zabarino was named to the 2022 USATFCCCA All-Academic team. Zabarino began her collegiate career with one semester at Universita del Piemonte Orientale in Italy.
HIGH SCHOOL: Zabarino is a 2018 graduate of IIS Q. Sella High in Italy. She has represented Italy on the European and World Stage since 2015. She won the 2019 European Throwing Cup U23 javelin throw title with a PR of 192-4 (58.62m), which is the Italian U23 record…She also won the 2019 Italian javelin throw title. She placed fifth in the javelin throw at the 2018 IAAF World U20 Championships in Finland. She won the Italian junior title in 2017 with a throw of 173-1. She placed fifth at the 2016 European U18 Championships and then fifth at the 2016 Italian Senior National Championships, the youngest finalist. She won the 2015 Italian junior national title and represented Italy at the World Youth Championships in Colombia.
PERSONAL: Sara was born on August 1, 1999 in Biella, Italy…Her parents are Anna la Paglia and Maurizio Zabarino and she has one brother, Matteo…She likes any type of outdoor activities…Says her favorite food is everything, “I love food!”…Someday she would like to travel to Cappadocia, Greece, New Zealand and Canada…She is a Molecular Pharmacology and Toxicology major at USC.
